Uninstall WordPress in cPanel by taking a full account backup, then removing the install in Softaculous with Remove Directory and Remove Database ticked. If Softaculous does not list the site, delete the files in the document root and drop the database and user named in wp-config.php, then reload the domain.
Back up WordPress and cPanel before uninstalling
Download the backup before you delete anything. A removed database cannot be rebuilt from the files alone, and the files cannot rebuild the database.
- Backup — In cPanel open Backup and use Download a Full Account Backup. That archive holds the files, the MySQL databases and the mailboxes.
- Write down the database — Open
wp-config.phpin the document root and copyDB_NAME,DB_USERandDB_HOST. Do this before the file is deleted. - Pick one removal path — Use Softaculous when the install is listed there. Use File Manager only when it is not.
- Verify — Reload the domain in a private window. A cPanel default page or a 404 means WordPress is no longer serving that host.
Restore steps are in the cPanel backup and restore guide. If you want a copy of the site before you wipe it, follow how to clone a WordPress site.
Uninstall WordPress in cPanel with Softaculous Remove
Softaculous removes the WordPress directory and its database together when both boxes are ticked. Use this path when the Installations list shows the domain you mean to erase.
- In cPanel open Softaculous Apps Installer, then the Installations tab.
- Match the row to the exact domain and folder. An addon domain and a staging subdomain are separate rows.
- Choose Remove. Tick Remove Directory and Remove Database. Tick the database user only when no other site on the account uses that user.
- Confirm. Wait until the row disappears from All Installations, then reload the domain.

If the domain is not in that list, Softaculous did not create it, or the record was already removed. Switch to the manual path. Do not click Remove on a different row.
Remove WordPress from cPanel by hand: files, database and user
Manual removal deletes the WordPress files in File Manager, then the MySQL database and user you copied from wp-config.php. Do the database note first. After the files are gone, that name is no longer on disk.
- In File Manager open the document root for that domain. For the main site that is
public_html. For an addon domain it is the folder shown on the addon domain row. - Delete
wp-admin,wp-content,wp-includes, and the WordPress files in that same folder:wp-config.php,index.php,wp-*.php,.htaccessif it belongs to WordPress, andxmlrpc.php. - Leave mail folders, other site folders, and any file that is not part of this install.
- Open MySQL Databases. Delete the database whose name matches
DB_NAME. Then deleteDB_USERif it is not assigned to another database.
| What you remove | Softaculous Remove | File Manager plus MySQL |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress files | Yes, when Remove Directory is ticked | You delete them in File Manager |
| MySQL database | Yes, when Remove Database is ticked | You delete the name from wp-config.php |
| Other sites on the account | Untouched if you pick the right row | Untouched if you stay in that document root |
Find the WordPress database name in wp-config.php
The database name is the value of DB_NAME inside wp-config.php, in the document root, before you delete that file. DB_USER is the MySQL user. DB_HOST is almost always localhost on shared cPanel hosting.
cPanel prefixes the name with the account username, so the value looks like account_wp123, not the short name you typed in WordPress. Delete that full name in MySQL Databases. Deleting a similarly named database from another install will take that other site offline.
Remove WordPress from addon domains and staging subdomains
Each domain, addon domain and staging subdomain can have its own WordPress install. Softaculous lists one row per install. Removing the main domain does not remove staging.example.com or a shop on an addon domain.
Check the document root on the addon domain screen before you delete files. A second install one folder deeper, such as public_html/blog, is a separate site. Delete only the folder that matches the site you mean to erase.
Reinstall WordPress in cPanel after a clean removal
A clean install is a new WordPress in the same document root after the old files and database are gone. In cPanel open Softaculous, choose WordPress, and set the directory to the root you just emptied. Do not install into a subfolder unless you want the site at a path such as /blog/.
The click path is in how to install WordPress in cPanel. Shared Linux and WordPress plans at WebJi include cPanel. If you only needed the files gone so a new site can be uploaded, the same empty public_html is ready for that upload.
Clean up cron jobs and forwarders after the WordPress uninstall
WordPress can leave jobs that still run after the files are gone. In cPanel open Cron Jobs and delete entries that call wp-cron.php or a plugin script for the removed install.
Email forwarders that pointed at an old form plugin are harmless, but they confuse the next mailbox test. Clear the ones you no longer want under Forwarders. Then open Softaculous All Installations again. One remaining row means one remaining site, often a staging subdomain. Remove that row the same way, or the file count on the account will not drop.
Linux shared hosting on WebJi uses cPanel hosting. The panel login is separate from the client area where invoices and tickets live. Email support@webji.services if the database name is unclear before you delete it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I uninstall WordPress from cPanel?
Back up the account, then remove the install in Softaculous with Remove Directory and Remove Database ticked. If it is not listed, delete the WordPress files in the document root and delete the MySQL database named in wp-config.php.
How do I remove a WordPress installed by Softaculous?
Open Softaculous, then Installations, and choose Remove on that domain's row. Tick Remove Directory and Remove Database. A staging subdomain is a second row and has to be removed on its own.
Can I delete WordPress files without breaking cPanel?
Yes. Deleting wp-admin, wp-content and wp-includes removes that site. It does not remove cPanel, mail, or other domains, as long as you stay inside that site's document root and you do not delete another database.
How do I delete the WordPress database too?
Copy DB_NAME and DB_USER from wp-config.php first. In cPanel open MySQL Databases and delete that database, then the user if nothing else uses it. Softaculous can do the same step when Remove Database is ticked.
How do I start over with a fresh WordPress install?
After the files and database are gone, install WordPress again with Softaculous into the empty document root. The steps are in the cPanel WordPress install guide.
Will uninstalling WordPress delete my files?
It deletes the WordPress files for that install, including themes, plugins and uploads inside wp-content, when you tick Remove Directory or delete those folders yourself. It does not delete other sites, mail, or a backup you already downloaded.
Is WebJi® an Indian company?
Yes. WebJi® is headquartered in Jaipur, Rajasthan and has operated since 2005. Billing, support and governance all run from India.
