Pick cPanel for the ecosystem, DirectAdmin for the licence bill
Choose DirectAdmin when you buy the licence yourself and run a VPS under 2 GB RAM: it is billed per server and idles at a fraction of cPanel's memory. Choose cPanel when clients, developers or a billing script already expect WHM. Both panels handle domains, email, DNS, MySQL, cron and free SSL.
- Choose cPanel if the freelancer or agency working on your site opens WHM every week.
- Choose cPanel if you resell hosting and your billing platform is built around cPanel packages.
- Choose DirectAdmin on a 1 GB or 2 GB VPS, where the panel's own RAM is a real share of the machine.
- Choose DirectAdmin if a fixed per-server licence keeps your cost plan predictable.
- Neither decides how fast a page loads. PHP version, the database and caching do.
A third name appears in the same searches: CWP. It is free and open source, it is a separate product, and it changes none of the trade-off below. If you already resell cPanel accounts, the switching cost sits in your reseller plans, not in the panel itself.
Licence pricing: per account against per server
cPanel replaced one flat per-server licence with tiers priced by account count in June 2019. DirectAdmin stayed on per-server plans. That single change is the whole cost argument.
List prices recorded on 30 October 2026: cPanel Solo, one account, about $15.99 a month; DirectAdmin Personal about $5 a month, DirectAdmin Lite $29 a month. A host carrying 200 accounts pays well above Solo, which is why several providers moved.
| Item | cPanel | DirectAdmin |
|---|---|---|
| Billing unit | Per account tier | Per server |
| One-account list price, 30 Oct 2026 | About $15.99/mo (Solo) | About $5/mo (Personal) |
| 100 accounts | Price rises with the count | Unchanged |
| RAM the panel needs | 1-2 GB, better at 4 GB | 256-512 MB |
| Linux support | RHEL family only | Most major distributions |
| Paid extras in common use | WP Toolkit tiers, JetBackup | Fewer; CustomBuild included |
On a cPanel hosting plan sold by a host, none of this reaches you: the licence sits inside the plan price. WebJi® shared Linux plans start at ₹300 a month before 18% GST with cPanel included. The maths above only applies when you license a server you run. Tier-by-tier Indian figures are in the cPanel licence price guide.
Server memory: what each panel leaves for your sites
DirectAdmin idles at roughly 256-512 MB of RAM. cPanel asks for 1-2 GB and runs comfortably at 4 GB. Those are the vendors' published requirements, as summarised on the comparison pages read on 30 October 2026.
On a 1 GB VPS that gap is the machine. A panel holding 1.5 GB leaves almost nothing for PHP workers and MySQL; the same box under DirectAdmin still has room for the site. On a 16 GB server nobody notices either way.
Panel memory is overhead, not page speed. A LiteSpeed or Nginx stack, a current PHP branch and a cached WordPress install beat a panel swap every time.
Features that differ in daily use
Both panels create domains, mailboxes, MySQL databases, cron jobs, DNS records and free Let's Encrypt certificates. The gaps are depth and tooling, not missing basics.
| Capability | cPanel | DirectAdmin |
|---|---|---|
| File manager | Extract, edit, set permissions, bulk actions | Upload, edit, move, download |
| Forwarders, autoresponders, lists, detailed spam rules | Accounts, forwarders, autoresponders, spam filter | |
| DNS | Zone Editor with a guided screen | Direct zone editing |
| Backups | Built in, plus paid JetBackup | Built in, scheduled, per account |
| WordPress | Softaculous plus WP Toolkit | Softaculous or Installatron |
| Web server stack | EasyApache 4 | CustomBuild 2.0: Apache, Nginx, OpenLiteSpeed |
| API and billing hooks | UAPI, WHM API, widest tool support | REST API, WHMCS supported |
| Written help online | Largest pool of tutorials | Smaller, adequate |
Read the table as depth against weight. cPanel suits a team that lives in the panel all day; DirectAdmin covers the five jobs most site owners actually open it for: a mailbox, a database, a file, a backup, an SSL certificate.

Moving a site from cPanel to DirectAdmin
Both panels write account backups, so the move is a restore rather than a rebuild. Order matters: DNS moves last, once files, databases and mail already sit on the new server.
- In cPanel open Files, then Backup, and download a Full Account backup, or the home directory plus each database.
- Lower the domain's DNS TTL to 300 seconds a day before the move, so the switch propagates quickly.
- On the DirectAdmin server, restore the backup with the admin backup and restore tool, then re-create any mailbox or forwarder it did not carry.
- Re-issue the SSL certificate on the new server. The old certificate belongs to the old host's files and will not be reused.
- Test before DNS changes, using a hosts file entry or a temporary subdomain: load the site, send and receive mail, run each cron job by hand.
- Point DNS at the new server, keep the old account online for 72 hours, then cancel it.
You know it worked when the domain loads from the new server, mail arrives in both directions, the padlock shows the new certificate, and cron writes its next line at the scheduled time.
Common failure: forwarders and cron entries vanish in a restore, and mail starts bouncing three days later. Fix: compare the old and new mailbox and cron lists before you cancel the old plan.
What WebJi® installs, and what we are not
WebJi® is a hosting company in Jaipur. It is not cPanel LLC, which WebPros owns, and it is not DirectAdmin, published by JBMC Software. We install their software on servers we manage; we do not sell their licences on their behalf.
Linux shared plans ship cPanel inside the plan, from ₹300 a month before 18% GST. Windows plans use Plesk. If you need a VPS with either panel, we quote it by email before payment and name the panel in the quote.
Every invoice is in INR with 18% GST. Email support@webji.services answers in Hindi and English, 24/7, with an average first reply under 60 minutes. The office phone is not a support line. Send us the account details and we will tell you which panel you are on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DirectAdmin better than cPanel?
Not in general. It is better on licence cost and RAM, and weaker on documentation, WHM depth and third-party tooling. Pick it when you license your own server and the panel's overhead is a real share of the machine. Pick cPanel when familiarity and integrations save more time than the licence costs.
Why did cPanel become expensive?
In June 2019 cPanel replaced one per-server licence with tiers priced by account count. A server carrying 200 accounts moved from a flat fee to a much larger monthly bill, and hosts selling many small accounts passed that increase on. DirectAdmin kept per-server pricing.
Can I migrate from cPanel to DirectAdmin?
Yes. Download a full account backup in cPanel, restore it on the DirectAdmin server, re-create anything the restore missed, reissue SSL, then move DNS last. Keep the old account online for 72 hours and test mail and cron before you cancel it.
Which panel is easier for beginners?
cPanel, because almost every tutorial, video and forum answer is written for it, and the icon grid looks the same at every host. DirectAdmin's Evolution skin is simple to use, but when something breaks there is less written help to search.
Does DirectAdmin use less RAM than cPanel?
Yes, by a wide margin: roughly 256-512 MB against 1-2 GB for the panel itself. On a 1 GB or 2 GB VPS that decides how much memory is left for PHP and MySQL. On a large server the difference disappears into spare capacity.
Which panel does WebJi® use?
cPanel on Linux shared and reseller plans, Plesk on Windows plans. A VPS can be quoted with cPanel or DirectAdmin, and the quote names the panel before you pay. WebJi® is the host, not the panel vendor.
