Shared by default, dedicated only when volume or access demands it
Choose a shared IP for a normal website, a small mailing list and a tight budget. Choose a dedicated IP when you send mail at volume, need one fixed address for allowlisting, or run a service that authenticates by IP. Everything else you have read about SSL and rankings is out of date.
- Shared IP: a brochure site, a blog, a small shop, a monthly newsletter.
- Dedicated IP: frequent bulk mail, a corporate mail relay, a payment or trading service with an IP allowlist.
- Neither: a VPN or proxy address, which is a different product and does nothing for your website.
What a shared IP and a dedicated IP actually are
An IP address is the number a server answers on. On shared hosting, dozens of accounts answer on the same number. On a dedicated IP, one account answers alone.
| Item | Shared IP | Dedicated IP |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses the address | Many accounts on the same server | Your account only |
| Reputation | Shared with the neighbours | Built and owned by you |
| Warm-up needed | No, the pool is already sending | Yes, volume has to ramp up |
| Cost | Included in the plan | A separate line, per month |
| HTTPS | Works normally with SNI | Works normally |
| Typical user | A website with modest mail volume | A high-volume sender or an allowlisted service |
The address is not a security boundary. Two accounts on one IP cannot read each other's files or mail; isolation happens at the account level, not the network level.
A shared IP does not block HTTPS any more
Server Name Indication lets one IP address serve many certificates, and every current browser supports it. A site on a shared IP gets HTTPS, a padlock and a valid certificate like any other site.
The old rule, one certificate per address, died with that change. If a sales page tells you a dedicated IP is required for SSL, it is repeating a requirement from the era of Windows XP browsers. WebJi® shared plans issue free SSL on the shared address.
The one real exception is a very old client or device that cannot send SNI. That is a support question about your visitors, not a reason to buy an address for a normal website.
A dedicated IP does not raise your Google ranking
Google ranks pages, not IP addresses. Sites that share an address rank independently, and a manual action follows the site that broke the rules rather than everyone on its server.
What does affect ranking is the usual list: crawlable pages, fast responses, useful content and a working HTTPS setup. None of those changes when the address changes.
Speed is worth a mention because it is the other half of the upsell. A shared server with a crowded neighbour can be slow, but the fix is a plan with reserved CPU, not a second address on the same crowded machine.
Mail volume is the honest reason to pay for one
A dedicated IP only helps if you send enough to keep its reputation healthy. Send too little and the address cools down, which is worse than a warm shared pool.
One email platform's public help page, read on 30 October 2026, recommends a dedicated IP when you send at least three campaigns a week to 3,000 or more contacts, or more than 100,000 emails a month. It also states that the first weeks need daily or alternate-day sending to warm the address.
Check the foundation before you buy: SPF, DKIM and DMARC records on the sending domain. A dedicated IP with broken authentication lands in spam just as fast as a shared one.
Check which IP your site is on
- Resolve your domain: run
dig +short yourdomain.comon macOS or Linux, ornslookup yourdomain.comon Windows. - Resolve a second site you know is on the same host and plan.
- Compare the two numbers. The same address means a shared IP.
- In cPanel, the right-hand statistics column shows the account's shared IP address, if the theme still displays it.
You know the answer when the numbers match. A different number on the same plan is not proof of a dedicated IP; the host may simply have moved you to another shared server, so confirm with support before you assume anything.
What WebJi® provides, and what we are not
WebJi® is a hosting company in Jaipur. It is not Brevo, not Mailtrap, and not a VPN provider, so the addresses discussed above are server addresses, not VPN endpoints. We do not sell either company's service.
Shared hosting runs on the server's shared address, and HTTPS is issued free on it. A dedicated IP on a VPS or dedicated server is quoted by email before payment, because availability depends on the machine.
Every plan is billed in INR with 18% GST. Email support@webji.services, 24/7 in Hindi and English, with an average first reply under 60 minutes, if you want the mail setup checked first. Our SSL certificates page covers the certificate side, and contact reaches the team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a dedicated IP for SSL?
No. SNI lets one IP serve many certificates, and every current browser supports it. A shared IP carries HTTPS normally, and free certificates are issued on shared plans.
Does a dedicated IP help SEO?
No. Google ranks pages and sites, not addresses. A penalty follows the site that broke the rules, not every site on the same server.
What is the difference between a shared and a dedicated IP?
A shared IP is used by many accounts on the same server, so its sending reputation is shared. A dedicated IP is used by one account, which owns and maintains that reputation.
When is a dedicated IP worth paying for?
At high, regular mail volume, or when a partner, bank or internal system requires your fixed address on an allowlist. Below that, a warm shared pool usually delivers better.
Can a shared IP hurt email deliverability?
It can, if a neighbour sends spam and the address lands on a blocklist. Reputable hosts monitor complaints and remove bad senders. Your domain reputation stays separate from the shared address.
How do I check if my site has a shared IP?
Resolve your domain and a second site on the same host. If both return the same address, it is shared. cPanel may also show the shared address in its statistics column.
