Reseller Hosting vs VPS

Quick answer: Choose reseller hosting if you sell hosting to clients and want WHM with per-client cPanel accounts and no server admin. Choose a VPS if you need root access, custom software or dedicated CPU for your own apps. Reseller starts at ₹4,000 a year before GST; a VPS costs more once the cPanel licence is added.

Reseller hosting or VPS: the verdict

Choose reseller hosting if you sell hosting to clients and want WHM with per-client cPanel accounts and no server admin. Choose a VPS if you need root access, custom software or dedicated CPU for your own apps. Reseller starts at ₹4,000 a year before GST; a VPS costs more once the cPanel licence is added.

WebJi® sells both products, so this page compares the two, not two companies. Reseller hosting is a business in a box; a VPS is a server you operate.

Control: WHM versus root

On a reseller plan you log in to WHM, create a package, create an account, and hand the client a cPanel login. You can suspend, back up and change quotas. You cannot install a kernel module, open a port or replace the mail server.

A VPS gives you root. You choose the OS, install Node.js or Docker, tune MySQL and write the firewall rules. That freedom includes the firewall mistake that takes every client offline at once. If you cannot picture recovering a failed boot from the console, the reseller plan is the honest choice.

Cost per client in rupees

Compare cost per client, not cost per plan. LR-START at ₹4,000 a year across ten clients is ₹400 each, before 18% GST. LR-Dev at ₹12,500 across sixty is ₹208 each. The tier gets cheaper per client as the book grows.

A VPS looks cheaper until three lines are added: the cPanel licence, the hours you spend patching and monitoring, and the backup destination. At ₹500 an hour, four hours a month is ₹24,000 a year — more than any reseller tier here.

WebJi® VPS plans are quoted by email before payment, because the specification decides the price. Ask for the quote with the control panel option you want named.

Who each one fits

  • Reseller: a freelance designer adding recurring revenue, an agency hosting 10–60 small sites, anyone who does not want 2 a.m. alerts.
  • VPS: a developer running Node, Python or Docker, a SaaS product with steady memory use, an agency with an in-house sysadmin.

If the client sites are WordPress and cPanel, the reseller plan matches the tooling. If your own application needs a custom runtime, the VPS earns a place beside the reseller plan rather than replacing it.

What reseller hosting gives you

You get WHM, a fixed number of cPanel accounts, white-label nameservers on your own domain, and pooled disk and bandwidth you split into packages. The host owns the server: kernel updates, PHP builds, the mail queue, backups and DDoS filtering are theirs.

White-label matters more than it sounds. Your client sees ns1.yourbrand.in and a cPanel URL on your domain, never the upstream host's badge. Moving to another provider later means new nameservers, not a new panel to learn.

What a VPS gives you

A VPS is a virtual machine with its own RAM, CPU and disk, plus root, a console and snapshots. A managed VPS adds patching and monitoring; an unmanaged one leaves the whole checklist to you.

That checklist is longer than most buyers expect: mail deliverability, PHP-FPM pools, MySQL tuning, fail2ban, SSL renewal and off-server backups. A VPS does not include WHM; the panel is a separate licence, and cPanel prices it per account.

When reseller hosting stops being enough

Three signals, in the order they usually appear.

  • The account cap is reached and the next tier costs more than the VPS you would need.
  • Clients hit CPU or entry-process limits at the same hour daily, and the fair-share policy is the ceiling.
  • A client needs Node.js, Docker, Redis or a PHP extension the shared stack does not carry.

A slow site alone is not a signal. Read the account's resource usage in cPanel first: one plugin can exhaust a reseller account and a 16 GB VPS equally.

Moving clients from reseller to VPS

  1. Build the VPS and its panel first. Do not move a client until the new server answers on a test domain.
  2. Copy one low-risk site with the WHM transfer tool or a manual backup and restore, then test forms, mail and SSL.
  3. Lower the DNS TTL to 300 seconds a day before the move, so a mistake can be undone in minutes.
  4. Move clients in batches, keep the reseller account for a month as the rollback, then cancel it.

Mail is the step people forget. MX records, SPF, DKIM and DMARC must point at the new server before the first mailboxes move, or messages bounce quietly for a day.

If you would rather not run the migration, the reseller hosting tiers and the VPS server range are both quoted with migration help; email support@webji.services with the account count and the panel you use. Support runs 24/7 in Hindi and English, first reply usually under an hour, and the price list shows the published tiers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between reseller hosting and VPS?

A reseller plan rents you WHM and a set of cPanel accounts to sell under your own brand, with the host running the server. A VPS is a virtual machine with root access that you configure and maintain. One is a business in a box; the other is a server you operate.

Which is better for starting a hosting business?

Reseller hosting, unless you already administer Linux servers. It gives you WHM, white-label nameservers and per-client accounts from day one, and the host handles kernel updates, mail and backups. A VPS adds a control panel licence and admin hours before your first client arrives.

Does reseller hosting include root access?

No. You get WHM over your own client accounts, not root on the server. You can create, suspend and back up accounts and set quotas, but you cannot install kernel modules, open ports or change the mail server. Root access is what a VPS provides.

How many client sites fit on reseller versus VPS?

A reseller plan is capped by its cPanel account allocation, which is why the tiers are described by client count rather than disk. A VPS fits as many sites as its RAM and CPU can carry, so the limit is measured rather than licensed. Track memory per site before you move either way.

Which is cheaper to start with in India?

Reseller hosting starts at ₹4,000 a year before 18% GST on LR-START. A VPS adds a cPanel licence and the hours you spend patching and monitoring; four hours a month at ₹500 is ₹24,000 a year. The VPS only wins once your own application needs root.

Can I move clients from reseller to VPS later?

Yes. Build the VPS and its panel first, migrate one low-risk site, lower DNS TTL to 300 seconds, then move clients in batches. Keep the reseller account for a month as the rollback, and point MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC at the new server before mailboxes move.
