Plesk Tutorial for Beginners: A Full Tour of the Control Panel

Quick answer: A first Plesk login is the host URL on port 8443, using the username the host sent. The left sidebar is the map: Websites and Domains holds files, DNS, SSL, and databases. Mail holds mailboxes. Applications holds one-click installs. Do not guess the port or the hostname.

Plesk vs cPanel: Your First 60 Seconds

cPanel greets you with a grid of icons, one per function. Plesk greets you with a left sidebar organised around your sites: you click a domain under Websites & Domains and everything for that site — files, DNS, SSL, PHP, databases — opens in one place. The powers are the same; the geography differs. Coming from cPanel, look for the equivalent under the site's card first rather than hunting an icon row. The cPanel comparison maps the differences in detail.

  1. Home — the overview dashboard.
  2. Websites and Domains — the workhorse: files, DNS, SSL, databases and apps per domain.
  3. Mail — mailbox creation and settings.
  4. Applications — one-click installers.
  5. Statistics and Files — usage and the global file manager.

If you come from cPanel, the mental shift is that cPanel organises by function with a grid of icons. Plesk organises by domain — click a domain card and everything about it opens in one place. Same powers, different geography. On WebJi® Plesk hosting the panel is the same Plesk you would see elsewhere. The cPanel comparison maps the differences.

Logging In and the Dashboard Tour

Open https://yourdomain.com:8443 — or https://server-ip:8443 if DNS has not propagated — and sign in with the username and password your host issued. On a first login Plesk asks for contact details and a new password; fill both, because support uses the contact address for ticket updates.

The sidebar is the map of the whole panel:

  1. Home — the overview and shortcuts.
  2. Websites & Domains — the workhorse: files, DNS, SSL, PHP and databases per site.
  3. Mail — mailbox creation and domain mail settings.
  4. Files — the file manager across the subscription.
  5. Databases and Applications — MySQL screens and one-click installs.
  6. Statistics — disk and traffic usage.

If a tab or button named in any guide is missing from your panel, the usual cause is that the permission is switched off for your subscription — ask the host to enable it rather than hunting for a bug. When something misbehaves, check Logs under the site before escalating; WebJi®'s 24/7 desk (support@webji.services, Hindi and English) reads the same log lines with you.

Adding Your First Domain (Subscription)

A subscription is Plesk's word for your hosting account: a bundle of resources (disk space, traffic) and permissions (which features you may touch). On a shared plan the host usually creates it with your first domain already inside — if the domain is listed under Websites & Domains, this step is done.

To add another site, click Add Domain on the same screen, enter the domain name, and Plesk creates the site, its document root and its DNS zone. Resources are not shared between subscriptions — a second plan starts its own disk and traffic budget — so keep one subscription per client project if you resell work.

File Manager: Upload and Edit Website Files

Go to Websites & Domains, open your domain's File Manager, and enter the httpdocs folder — that is the web root; whatever sits here is what visitors get. Click Upload to add a single file or a whole directory, and if you uploaded a ZIP, RAR or TAR archive, click its row and choose Extract Files to unpack it in place. Text files open with an inline editor, so a quick .htaccess tweak needs no download.

For bulk transfers an FTP or SFTP client such as WinSCP or FileZilla connects to the same files — the host, username and password live under the domain's Hosting & DNS settings. You know the upload worked when the site shows the new page after a hard refresh.

Creating Email Accounts and Webmail Access

Open Mail and click Create Email Address. Set the local part (sales@), a strong password, and the mailbox quota; tick the notification email if you want creation confirmed. Clearing the Mailbox checkbox instead turns the address into a forwarder that pushes mail to an existing inbox — handy for info@ style aliases.

Webmail needs no client setup: the address works in the browser at yourdomain.com/webmail straight away. The full walk-through with IMAP and SMTP ports lives in the Plesk email setup guide.

Databases: MySQL Setup in Plesk

Go to Databases > Add Database. Pick the site it belongs to, name the database, and create a database user with a password in the same form — note the generated prefix; Plesk adds it automatically on shared servers.

Copy the database name, user, password and host (usually localhost) into your application's configuration file, and the app connects. phpMyAdmin opens from the same screen for imports and inspections. If you install a CMS such as WordPress in the next section, its database is created for you automatically, so this screen is for the do-it-yourself cases.

One-Click SSL and WordPress Toolkit

For HTTPS, open the site and click SSL/TLS Certificates, choose Install a free basic certificate (Let's Encrypt), select the domains to cover, and install. Then switch on Redirect from HTTP to HTTPS on the hosting settings screen. View the page source afterwards: any http:// image, stylesheet or script keeps the padlock broken until it moves to HTTPS. Renewal runs on its own; if the padlock ever disappears, check the certificate is still bound to this hostname.

For WordPress, open WordPress Toolkit (or Applications on some builds), click Install, choose the domain, set the admin login, and wait for the green tick. The Toolkit then manages the site: one-click updates, a clone for staging, and a security scan. The WordPress Toolkit guide goes deeper.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use Plesk for the first time?

Log in at https://yourdomain.com:8443 with the credentials your host sent, complete the contact form and set a new password, then start at Websites & Domains — that screen holds files, DNS, SSL and databases for each site.

How do I upload files in Plesk?

Open the domain's File Manager under Websites & Domains, enter the httpdocs folder, click Upload, and extract any ZIP, RAR or TAR archive in place. For bulk transfers connect an FTP client such as WinSCP with the credentials under Hosting & DNS.

How do I create an email account in Plesk?

Open Mail and click Create Email Address, then set the local part, a password and the mailbox quota. Webmail for the new address works immediately at yourdomain.com/webmail.

What is a subscription in Plesk?

It is Plesk's name for your hosting account: a bundle of resources (disk space, traffic) plus permissions for which features you may use. On a shared plan the host creates it with your first domain inside.

How do I install WordPress on Plesk?

Open WordPress Toolkit, click Install, pick the domain and set an admin login. Plesk creates the database automatically and the site is ready in minutes; the Toolkit then handles updates, cloning and security scans.

Is Plesk harder than cPanel?

No, it is laid out differently. cPanel shows a grid of icons per function, while Plesk organises tools around each site under Websites & Domains. Once you click a domain, the tasks are the same files-mail-databases-SSL set.
