The verdict first

Choose ERPNext if you want one GPL codebase with every module included and a team that can read Python. Choose Odoo if you need Studio, a large app store and a polished interface, and accept per-user licensing for the Enterprise apps. Both self-host on the same kind of VPS.

WebJi® hosts both; it sells neither. The decision is about licence, modules and the people who will maintain the system, not about which demo looks better.

  • ERPNext: GPLv3, Frappe framework, every core module in the free edition.
  • Odoo: Community edition (LGPL) plus Enterprise, licensed per user, with Studio and the app store as commercial additions.
  • Both need a database server, a cache and a document renderer on the same machine.

Licensing: what is actually free

The word "open source" hides the difference that costs money.

ERPNextOdoo
LicenceGPLv3, one editionLGPL for Community, proprietary for Enterprise
Cost modelFree software; you pay for hosting and implementationPer user for Enterprise, or per user for Odoo Online
Accounting moduleIncluded in the free editionFull accounting is an Enterprise app
Studio or no-code builderNot equivalent; changes are made in the frameworkOdoo Studio, Enterprise only
Upgrade pathbench update, or a paid migration partnerVersioned migrations between major releases

For an Indian SMB with ten users, that table is the whole argument. ERPNext costs the server and the implementer. Odoo costs the server plus a per-user subscription once you need accounting, Studio or the subscription modules.

Modules and GST fit

Both ship Indian localisation: GST tax templates, HSN codes, e-invoice and e-way bill formats. The practical difference is depth.

  • ERPNext covers accounting, stock, manufacturing, HR, payroll, CRM, projects and assets in one install.
  • Odoo covers the same ground, with deeper retail and e-commerce tooling when the Enterprise apps are licensed.
  • ERPNext validation on manual entries is stricter; Odoo's chart-of-accounts templates need less setup for a new company.

Test the GST return you actually file before you commit. Both can produce GSTR-1 data, and both need the tax template configured correctly first, which is implementation work rather than a product difference.

Who can maintain it

ERPNext is Python on the Frappe framework with a MariaDB database and a Node build step. Odoo is Python with PostgreSQL and its own ORM. A developer comfortable in one is not automatically productive in the other.

If your team has nobody who can read Python, budget for a partner either way. The difference is what that partner charges: an ERPNext customisation is generally a code change in a single codebase, while an Odoo customisation often starts in Studio and becomes a paid app or a module.

Server requirements for self-hosting

Neither is a shared-hosting application. Both need root, a database service, a cache and a scheduled worker.

StackComponentsStarting point
ERPNextMariaDB, Redis, Node, wkhtmltopdf, bench CLI2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM for a small company
OdooPostgreSQL, wkhtmltopdf, workers sized to CPU2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM for a few concurrent users
Either, with 20+ usersSeparate database host, more workers4 vCPU, 8–16 GB RAM

Two configuration details decide whether the install feels fast. On ERPNext, set the Redis queues and the scheduler as separate services, or background jobs compete with page requests. On Odoo, set workers to roughly twice the CPU count plus one, and give PostgreSQL its own memory budget rather than letting the ORM take it.

What it costs to run in India

WebJi® lists two cloud configurations that carry either ERP. Figures are per month, before 18% GST.

ConfigurationSpecsPrice (₹/mo)
Cloud Entry2 vCPU · 8 GB RAM · 100 GB storage5,900
Cloud Business4 vCPU · 16 GB RAM · 250 GB storage7,900

Smaller VPS plans start lower and are quoted by email before payment. Whichever ERP you pick, the Odoo hosting and ERPNext hosting pages describe the install and what support covers.

A migration test that settles most arguments

Take one real month of your business — invoices, purchase orders, stock movements — and load it into both systems on a trial server. Then ask the person who will enter data daily which one they finished faster.

  1. Install each on its own VPS, not on your laptop, so the test includes real network latency.
  2. Load the same chart of accounts, tax templates and twenty items in both.
  3. Enter ten sales invoices and one purchase cycle in each, timing the work.
  4. Run the GST report you file monthly from each and compare the output line by line.
  5. Keep the one whose report matches your filing and whose data entry the team finished first.

Email support@webji.services if you need a server for that trial. Support is 24/7 by email in Hindi and English, average first reply under 60 minutes, and the office phone is not a support line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Odoo or ERPNext?

ERPNext is better value for a small company that wants every module in one free codebase and can work with a Python developer. Odoo is better when you need Studio, a large app store and a polished interface and can carry a per-user licence for the Enterprise apps.

Is ERPNext free unlike Odoo?

ERPNext is free software under GPLv3, with all core modules included. Odoo has a free Community edition, but accounting, Studio and many subscription features sit in Enterprise, which is licensed per user. Neither is free to run: both need a server and someone to maintain them.

Which ERP is best for Indian SMEs?

Both handle GST, HSN codes, e-invoicing and e-way bills. For a ten-user trading or manufacturing firm with a technical hire, ERPNext usually costs less over five years. For a retail brand that wants a polished front end and Studio customisation, Odoo is the easier sell internally.

Does Odoo support GST billing?

Yes. Odoo ships Indian localisation with GST tax templates, HSN and SAC codes, and e-invoice and e-way bill support. Full accounting lives in the Enterprise edition, so the licence matters before you plan a GST rollout on Community alone.

Can I self-host Odoo on a VPS?

Yes. Odoo runs on Python with PostgreSQL and wkhtmltopdf, and installs on a 2 vCPU, 4 GB VPS for a few concurrent users. Set workers to about twice the CPU count plus one, and give PostgreSQL its own memory budget.

How much RAM does Odoo need?

Plan 4 GB for a handful of concurrent users, 8 GB once several people work at the same time, and 16 GB when reports and imports run against a large database. ERPNext has similar needs, plus memory for its Redis queues and scheduler.
