RDP vs VPS

Quick answer: RDP is a way in; a VPS is the machine. Remote Desktop Protocol connects you to a Windows desktop on port 3389, while a virtual private server is an isolated machine with its own CPU, RAM and admin rights. In India, RDP usually means a shared Windows account, which is cheaper but not yours alone.

RDP vs VPS: the difference in one sentence

RDP is a way in; a VPS is the machine. Remote Desktop Protocol connects you to a Windows desktop on port 3389, while a virtual private server is an isolated machine with its own CPU, RAM and admin rights. In India, RDP usually means a shared Windows account, which is cheaper but not yours alone.

Choose an RDP account if one person needs a Windows desktop running a terminal-style tool: a trading platform, a browser automation job, a desktop app that has to stay online. Choose a VPS when you need to install anything you like, install a service, keep it isolated, or hand the machine to more than one person. If both are true, you want Windows on a VPS and you connect to it over RDP.

What RDP is: a protocol first, a product second

Remote Desktop Protocol is Microsoft's standard for sending a graphical desktop over a network. The applications keep running on the remote machine; your laptop only sends keystrokes and draws the screen. It ships with Windows and listens on TCP 3389, which is also why that port is a constant brute-force target.

  • Client: the Remote Desktop Connection app on Windows, Microsoft Remote Desktop on macOS, iOS and Android.
  • Server side: Windows Pro, Enterprise or Server. A Windows Home machine cannot host an RDP session.
  • Security: Network Level Authentication and a strong password at minimum, and a VPN or an allow-listed IP for anything exposed.
  • Linux equivalent: SSH, not RDP. A Linux server is managed from a terminal or a web console.

The product sold as "RDP" in the Indian market is usually a user account on a shared Windows Server, metered by disk space and sessions. That is a different purchase from a virtual machine, and the difference is what the rest of this page is about.

What a VPS gives you that an RDP account does not

A VPS is a virtual machine carved out of a physical host by a hypervisor, with its own operating system and a fixed share of CPU, RAM and disk. You get administrator or root rights, you can reboot it, and your neighbour's load does not decide your latency.

  • Your own OS: Windows Server or a Linux distribution, reinstalled whenever you want.
  • Admin rights: install a broker terminal, a database, a background service, or a firewall.
  • Isolation: other tenants on the host cannot read your files or use your session.
  • A dedicated IP: your address is not shared with strangers, so a flag on someone else's account does not land on yours.
  • Scaling: more vCPU or RAM is an upgrade, not a new account.

On Windows, you still reach that machine over RDP. The protocol is the same; what changes is that the desktop belongs to you alone.

RDP and VPS compared

The useful comparison is not RAM against RAM. It is what you are allowed to do when something goes wrong at 2 am.

Which one fits your job

Match the job to the product before you compare prices. Most bad purchases here are a shared account bought for a workload that needed isolation.

  • One trader running MetaTrader 4 or 5 with a couple of expert advisors: an RDP account is enough, and a VPS is better if the strategy matters.
  • A portfolio of bots or scrapers that must not stop: a VPS, because you need the service to restart and the IP to stay clean.
  • A desktop app one person opens during office hours: an RDP account, or a remote desktop to the office PC.
  • A website, database or mail server: a VPS or hosting plan, never an RDP account.
  • Several staff sharing one Windows environment: a VPS with the right licences, since Windows client editions allow one session at a time.

If the answer changes when the workload grows, buy the VPS now. Moving a live trading setup between providers costs more in downtime than the difference in the monthly bill.

Why a cheap shared RDP account is a risk

A shared RDP account puts strangers on the same public IP. When one of them runs something abusive, the address gets flagged, and every account behind it inherits the problem.

  • A broker or exchange may see a login from an IP that other accounts have used for prohibited activity.
  • Payment and ad platforms score the IP as well as the account, so a dirty address can cost you an appeal you did not cause.
  • You cannot install your own firewall or audit who else is on the host.
  • Restarts go through support, which is the wrong dependency during a market open.

None of that makes every shared account bad. It makes the price difference smaller than it looks once one blocked login is priced in.

What each costs in INR

An RDP account is the cheaper entry point because you rent a slice of a session. A Windows VPS costs more because you rent the machine, the licence and the isolation. Both are billed in INR, and WebJi® prices are before 18% GST.

Both products are set up by the team and reached with the Remote Desktop client, so the first login works the same way. The RDP VPS plans carry the trader-oriented configurations, and Windows VPS hosting carries the full-server ones for bots, apps and remote teams. If you are unsure which fits, email support@webji.services with the software you need to run and the hours it must stay up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between RDP and VPS?

RDP is a protocol that opens a desktop on a remote Windows machine. A VPS is the virtual machine itself, with its own operating system, CPU, RAM and admin rights. You can connect to a VPS over RDP when it runs Windows, or over SSH when it runs Linux. The protocol is the door; the server is the room.

Is RDP the same as a Windows VPS?

No. An RDP plan in India is usually a user account on a shared Windows server, without admin rights and with a shared IP. A Windows VPS is a whole machine you administer. They feel identical at the first login, which is exactly why the distinction catches buyers out.

Can multiple users share one RDP?

Technically yes, and providers sell multi-user plans. Windows client editions still allow one interactive session at a time, so several people on one desktop need Windows Server with the right licences. Two people sharing a session also share files, browser profiles and saved passwords.

Which is better, RDP or VPS?

Neither is better in general. Choose RDP for one person running a Windows desktop tool on a budget. Choose a VPS when you need admin rights, isolation, a clean IP, a service that must restart on its own, or more than one user. Most traders start on RDP and move to a VPS once the strategy earns it.

Why is cheap shared RDP risky?

Because strangers share the public IP. If another account on that address behaves abusively, a broker, exchange or ad platform can flag the address and your login inherits it. You also cannot install a firewall or see who else is on the host. A blocked login costs more than the monthly saving.

Do I get admin rights on RDP?

Not on a shared RDP account. You get a user session with the software the provider installed, and installs usually go through support. On a Windows VPS you get full administrator rights, which is what lets you install a trading terminal, a bot, a database or a firewall yourself.
