What a trading VPS does that your laptop cannot
Installing MT4 on a VPS takes five steps: connect over Remote Desktop, download your broker's own MT4 installer inside the server, run it, log in with the account number, password and exact server name, then enable AutoTrading. The terminal keeps running when you disconnect, so expert advisors stay live.
The gain is not speed. It is that the machine stays awake while yours does not.
- Your laptop can sleep, lose power, or reboot for an update. The server does not.
- The route from a data centre to the broker's trade server is shorter than the route from a home broadband line.
- Restarts move to a window you choose, instead of the moment Windows decides.
- One terminal can serve a strategy around the clock without keeping a screen on.
MetaQuotes now develops MT5 only, and many brokers still distribute MT4 builds. Install the build your broker gives you, because the server list inside it is what makes the login work.
Size the VPS for the terminals you will run
Buy for the terminals you will actually open, not the ones you might. These are working figures for a Windows server running MetaTrader with a handful of charts each.
| What you will run | RAM to plan | vCPU | Disk |
|---|---|---|---|
| One MT4 terminal, two or three charts | 2 GB | 2 | 40 GB |
| Two or three MT4 terminals | 4 GB | 2 | 60 GB |
| MT4 live plus MT5 live | 8 GB | 4 | 100 GB |
| MT5 with backtests alongside live terminals | 8–16 GB | 4 | 100 GB or more |
MT4 is a 32-bit application, so one terminal rarely passes half a gigabyte with a few charts attached. MT5 is 64-bit and keeps more history in memory, which is why a backtest is the thing that runs a small VPS out of RAM.
Buy the Windows licence with the plan. A cheap unlicensed server fails Windows activation within weeks and drops into reduced mode at the worst moment.
Connect to the Windows VPS with Remote Desktop
Remote Desktop puts the server's desktop in a window on your own machine. Nothing is installed on your PC to do this.
- On Windows, press Win+R, type mstsc, press Enter. On macOS use the Windows App, which replaced Microsoft Remote Desktop.
- Type the server IP in the Computer field, then click Show Options and enter Administrator with the password from the welcome email.
- Click Connect and accept the certificate warning. It appears because the server presents its own certificate, not one bought for the IP.
- Wait for the taskbar and the desktop icons. That is the finish line: you are working on the server, not on your PC.
If the connection is refused, the usual causes are a mistyped IP, an RDP port that is not open yet, or a password opened with the wrong keyboard layout. Send the exact error to support@webji.services instead of retrying blind.
Download MT4 inside the VPS, from your broker
Open Edge or Chrome on the server, not on your laptop, and go to your broker's own download page. The broker-branded installer arrives with that broker's server list already inside, so the login screen offers the right server without you typing a name from memory.
If Edge says the file is not commonly downloaded, choose Keep and then Keep anyway. That prompt is about download reputation, not about the file being unsafe. A generic MetaQuotes download works, but leaves the server field empty.
Never take an installer from a Telegram group, a forum attachment, or a file-sharing link. A tampered terminal can read your trading password the first time you log in.
Install MT4 and log in to the trading account
The installer is a five-click job. The login is where people lose an evening.
- Double-click the downloaded setup file and allow the administrator prompt if Windows shows one.
- Click Next through the wizard and keep the default folder. Note the path, usually C:\Program Files (x86) followed by the broker's name, so you can find terminal.exe later.
- Click Finish and let the terminal open. It creates a demo account on first launch, which is useful for checking the install before you touch a live login.
- Open File, then Login to Trade Account. Type the account number, the password, and select the server whose name matches the broker's email exactly.
- Press OK. You know it worked when the bottom-right status bar shows connected with a latency figure in milliseconds and the Journal tab prints a login record.
Read the error before you change anything. Invalid account means the login number or password is wrong. No connection, or a status icon that keeps spinning, usually means the server name is wrong or the port is blocked from that network. Change one field, then try again.
Turn on AutoTrading so the EA actually trades
An attached expert advisor can sit on a chart for days and never send an order. Three switches have to agree before it will.
- The AutoTrading button on the toolbar must be green. A red button blocks every expert on that terminal.
- In the expert's properties, on the Common tab, Allow live trading must be ticked. Allow DLL imports only if that specific expert needs it.
- The chart's top-right corner must show a smiley face. A sad face means algo trading is off for the terminal; no face at all means the expert is not attached.
Then read the Experts tab. If it prints trade is disabled, the account is still a demo or the broker has switched algo trading off for that login. Both are account settings, not VPS settings.
Keep the terminal running after you disconnect
Close the Remote Desktop window with the X. Do not use Start, then Sign out. Closing the window disconnects the session and leaves it running on the server, which is what keeps the terminal connected. Signing out ends the session.
Two Windows settings still catch people. Automatic updates can restart the machine at 03:00, so set active hours or schedule restarts outside market hours. In the power plan, set sleep and hibernate to Never on a server that is meant to stay awake.
You know it worked when you close RDP, wait ten minutes, reconnect, and the terminal shows the same connection state while the Experts log has kept printing in the meantime.
Pick a VPS location close to the broker's server
Latency is distance, not processor speed. Measure it from inside the server before you commit to a location: open Command Prompt on the VPS and run ping -n 20 followed by the trade server hostname your broker publishes.
Under 10 ms is excellent for scalping. Between 30 and 50 ms is fine for most swing systems. Anything above 100 ms is a location problem, and adding RAM will not move the number. MT4 also shows its own latency in the bottom-right corner once a terminal is logged in, so compare that figure against the ping.
Run MT4 and MT5 side by side
Both terminals can live on one Windows server. Install MT5 as a separate program, then launch each terminal with the /portable switch so its data folder stays beside the executable instead of in the shared AppData tree.
To set that up, right-click terminal.exe, choose Send to, then Desktop (create shortcut), open the shortcut's properties, and add /portable after the quoted path in the Target field. Launch from that shortcut from then on. Two terminals on separate shortcuts never overwrite each other's profiles.
The resource maths is simple: each extra terminal adds roughly 1 GB. When the machine starts swapping, experts miss ticks and the Experts log fills with memory errors instead of trades.
Trading VPS pricing in INR
WebJi® lists two Windows cloud configurations that carry MetaTrader work. Both figures are per month, before 18% GST.
| Configuration | Specs | Price (₹/mo) |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Entry | 2 vCPU · 8 GB RAM · 100 GB storage | 5,900 |
| Cloud Business | 4 vCPU · 16 GB RAM · 250 GB storage | 7,900 |
Cloud Entry runs two or three MT4 terminals with room to spare. Cloud Business is the one to pick when an MT5 backtest runs beside live terminals. The MT4 VPS hosting and MT5 VPS hosting pages confirm the fit, and the trading VPS page covers the location question.
Anything outside those two shapes is quoted by email at support@webji.services before payment, in INR with a GST invoice. Support is 24/7 by email in Hindi and English, with an average first reply under 60 minutes. The office phone is not a support line.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install MT4 on a VPS?
Connect to the Windows server with Remote Desktop, open a browser inside it, download your broker's MT4 installer, run it and accept the default folder, then log in with File, Login to Trade Account using the account number, the password and the exact server name. Switch AutoTrading on last.
Should I download MT4 from MetaQuotes or from my broker?
From your broker. A broker-branded installer ships with that broker's server list already loaded, so the login screen offers the right server. A generic download leaves the server field empty and you have to type a name that must match exactly.
Why does MT4 say Invalid account after I log in?
Invalid account means the login number or the password is wrong. No connection, or a status icon that keeps spinning, usually means the server name does not match the broker's list or the VPS cannot reach that port. Change one field at a time and retry.
Does MT4 keep running after I close Remote Desktop?
Yes, if you close the window rather than signing out of Windows. Closing the window disconnects the session and the terminal keeps running on the server. Signing out ends the session, so avoid it while expert advisors are live.
How much RAM does one MT4 terminal need on a VPS?
Plan about 1 GB per MT4 terminal with two or three charts, because MT4 is a 32-bit application and rarely passes half a gigabyte on its own. MT5 is 64-bit and holds more history in memory, so budget 2 GB per terminal.
Can I run MT4 and MT5 on the same VPS?
Yes. Install each terminal in a separate folder and launch each from its own shortcut with the /portable switch so the two never share settings. One 8 GB Windows server runs a live MT4 terminal beside an MT5 backtest without swapping.
