How to Make a Forum Website

Quick answer: Choose the software first: phpBB runs on an ordinary cPanel account, Flarum needs Composer and PHP 8, and Discourse needs a 2 GB VPS with Docker and outbound email. Pick hosting that meets that floor, install it, then test by registering a user and posting a reply.

Choose the forum software before the host

Choose the script first, because it decides the hosting. phpBB runs on an ordinary cPanel account, Flarum needs Composer and a modern PHP build, and Discourse needs a 2 GB VPS with Docker and working outbound email. A forum is a database of discussions, not a page.

  • phpBB 3.3 — the safe default for a first forum on shared hosting; huge extension library, familiar layout.
  • Flarum 1.x — a lighter, modern board with good mobile layout; needs SSH and Composer to install.
  • Discourse 3 — the best long-term discussion experience; needs a VPS, Docker and a mail provider.
  • A hosted forum — live in minutes, but your posts live in someone else's database.

What each forum script needs to run

ScriptStackServer floorBest for
phpBB 3.3PHP 7.2 or newer, MySQL or MariaDB1 GB shared planFirst forum, cPanel user
Flarum 1.xPHP 8.x, MySQL 8, Composer1 vCPU, 1 GBA small board with a modern look
Discourse 3Ruby, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker2 vCPU, 2 GB plus swapA community meant to last years

A phpBB board fits cPanel hosting; Discourse belongs on a VPS. All three need a domain, an SSL certificate and a working mailbox, because registration depends on email. Discourse also needs outbound SMTP from day one: without it you cannot confirm the admin account.

Hosted forums: fast, and not yours

A hosted forum skips the install. You pick a subdomain, choose a theme and start posting within minutes, and the host handles updates and uptime.

The trade is ownership. Free tiers carry ads, the database stays on the host's servers, and exporting years of threads is limited or paid. One host we read today charges USD 7.99 a month to remove ads and USD 12.99 for branding removal and add-ons; another offers free forums with no export path described at all. If the community is the business, self-host; the forum hosting comparison covers the plans that fit each script.

Install phpBB on a cPanel account

This is the shortest path to a working board, and it is the one to try first if the forum is a side project.

  1. Download the phpBB 3.3 package from phpbb.com and unzip it.
  2. In cPanel open File Manager, create public_html/forum, and upload the contents of the phpBB3 folder into it.
  3. In MySQL Databases create a database and a user, then attach the user with All Privileges. Note the full prefixed names.
  4. Visit https://example.com/forum/install, choose the MySQL driver, enter the prefixed database details, and create the admin account.
  5. Delete the install folder from File Manager. The board stays locked until you do.

You know it worked when the board index loads without the install warning, a test registration completes, and a reply appears in the right forum.

Install Discourse on a VPS

Discourse is the heavier route and the better one for a community you expect to keep. Start from a clean Ubuntu VPS with 2 GB RAM, at least 2 GB of swap, and a DNS A record for forum.example.com already pointing at the server.

  1. sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y docker.io git
  2. sudo git clone https://github.com/discourse/discourse_docker.git /var/discourse
  3. cd /var/discourse && sudo ./discourse-setup
  4. Answer the prompts: host name, admin email, SMTP host, port, user and password. The script builds the container and starts it.
  5. Open https://forum.example.com, confirm the admin email, and finish the wizard.

You know it worked when the site loads over HTTPS, the confirmation email arrives in a real inbox, and sudo ./launcher logs app shows no SMTP errors. A forum that cannot send email cannot approve members.

Set the structure before inviting anyone

An empty forum with twenty categories looks abandoned. Start with three or four categories tied to what people will actually ask, one welcome thread that explains the rules, and a moderator who is not you.

  1. Create the categories and write a one-line description for each.
  2. Set guest permissions to read but not post; require registration to reply.
  3. Post five seed threads with real questions and answer them yourself, so the first visitor sees activity.
  4. Add the forum link to your main site navigation and to the footer.

If the main site runs WordPress, a WordPress hosting plan with a forum extension is another route, but a dedicated script will outgrow it sooner.

Stop spam without killing sign-ups

Open registration on a new domain attracts bots within days. Three settings handle almost all of it: email verification, a question that a human answers easily, and an approval queue for the first post.

  1. Turn on email activation, so an account needs a working address before it can post.
  2. Enable a question-and-answer challenge in the registration settings, not an image CAPTCHA.
  3. Hold the first post from every new account for approval, then release the account.
  4. Back up the database weekly and test a restore once, before you need it.

When to email WebJi about forum hosting

Email support@webji.services with the script and version, the PHP version, and the exact error from the installer or the mail log. Support covers the server, the PHP build and the mail port; script bugs go to the phpBB, Flarum or Discourse project. Support is 24/7 by email in Hindi and English, with an average first reply under 60 minutes, and the office phone is not a support line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best software to make a forum website?

phpBB for a first board on shared hosting, Flarum for a small modern community, Discourse for a long-lived one on a VPS. All three are free and open source.

Can I make a forum on shared hosting?

Yes with phpBB, which runs on PHP and MySQL inside a normal cPanel account. Discourse will not run there, because it needs Docker, PostgreSQL and 2 GB of RAM.

Do I need a VPS for Discourse?

Yes. Plan on 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM plus swap for a small community, and more once uploads and search grow. A mail provider is also required before setup can finish.

Is a free hosted forum a good idea?

For a quick test, yes. For anything you want to keep, no: free tiers show ads, and the posts stay in the host's database with limited export.

How do I stop spam on a new forum?

Require email activation, add a question challenge at registration, and hold the first post from each new account for approval. Those three settings stop most automated sign-ups.
