The short answer for a new forum
For a new forum, a cPanel shared plan is the best value, because phpBB, MyBB, SMF and Flarum all install from Softaculous and run on PHP and MySQL. L-Basic at ₹300 a month before 18% GST is enough to launch. A server is the right buy only for Discourse, or when the account keeps hitting process limits.
- Launch: shared cPanel, one-click install, email support, no server administration.
- Growth: L-Developer at ₹700 a month, still cPanel, more CPU and concurrent processes.
- Discourse: its own server from day one, because it needs Docker and root.
What a forum asks of hosting that a blog does not
A blog can be cached into a flat HTML file; a forum cannot. Visitors arrive logged in, so nearly every page view runs PHP, opens a database session, checks permissions and queries the newest posts.
Three loads follow from that. Sessions multiply with concurrent readers, not with registered accounts. Search runs against a posts table that only grows. Email leaves the server for every verification, reply notice and digest, which is where cheap hosting starts failing quietly.
- Concurrency, not member count, is the number that decides the plan.
- Attachments push disk and backup size up every month.
- Outbound email needs authentication, or notifications land in spam.
The four hosting routes compared
There are four ways to host a forum, and they differ in who fixes the server when it breaks. The prices below are WebJi's own, before 18% GST.
| Route | Price band (₹, before GST) | Panel | Support channel | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared cPanel hosting | 300–700 per month (L-Basic to L-Developer) | cPanel with Softaculous | Email, 24/7 | phpBB, MyBB, SMF or Flarum at launch |
| Cloud or VPS server | Cloud Entry 5,900 per month for 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB storage | Full server access | Email, 24/7 | Discourse, or a board outgrowing shared limits |
| Managed forum platform | Vendor subscription, often per member or per month | Vendor dashboard only | Vendor's own desk | A team with no one to run updates |
| Free hosted board | Free tier, with ads or a paid upgrade | Vendor dashboard only | Community forum, usually | A trial community with no domain of its own |
The managed and free routes remove the server work but also remove the data: the board lives on someone else's platform, on their URL, under their terms. Shared cPanel and a server keep the database and files in your own account, which is what makes a later move possible.
Which forum software fits which plan
Software choice decides the plan more than traffic does. These are the six boards a new community usually weighs.
| Software | Stack | Hosting it needs |
|---|---|---|
| phpBB | PHP and MySQL, free | Shared cPanel; the safest default |
| MyBB | PHP and MySQL, free | Shared cPanel; lighter admin than phpBB |
| SMF | PHP and MySQL, free | Shared cPanel; long-standing and steady |
| Flarum | PHP, free | Shared cPanel; modern and minimal |
| XenForo | PHP and MySQL, paid licence | Shared at first, a server as add-ons grow |
| Discourse | Ruby and PostgreSQL in Docker | A server of its own, 2 GB RAM minimum |
The line is Docker. Anything that runs as a container with its own database service needs root, which a shared account does not give. Everything else on the list installs into a folder and runs on the account's PHP and MySQL.
Install the forum on cPanel with Softaculous
The install is a form, not a build. Work in the domain or subdomain the forum will live on, so you do not have to move it later.
- Log in to cPanel for the account. This is not the billing login.
- Open Software, then Softaculous Apps Installer.
- Pick the board, for example phpBB, and click Install.
- Choose the domain, leave the directory blank for the root or type forum to use a subfolder, and accept the generated database name.
- Set the admin username, password and email, then install.
- Open the install URL that Softaculous prints at the end.
You know it worked when the board loads at its URL, you can log in as the admin, and a test post appears after a refresh. If the page shows a database error instead, the database user is wrong; Softaculous created one, so reinstall rather than editing config files by hand.
Email, spam and backups: the three jobs after install
A forum usually fails in month two, not on launch day. Three settings decide whether it survives.
Email. Registration links and reply notices leave the server. Send them through an authenticated mailbox on your own domain, with SPF and DKIM configured, and test one registration with a Gmail address before you invite anyone.
Spam. Turn on email verification, add a question a bot cannot answer, and approve the first accounts by hand. Hold new members to a post count before they can add links.
Backups. The database holds the community; the folder holds attachments and settings. Take a full account backup weekly and one database export before every update, then restore one into a test folder once so you know the file is usable.
The CMS hosting page covers the account these jobs run on, and what cPanel is covers the panel itself.
When to move off shared hosting
Shared hosting stops fitting when the account, not the board, is the bottleneck. Three signals are reliable.
- Resource-limit errors in the browser while the board is busy, or repeated entry-process warnings in cPanel.
- Searches and new-post pages taking seconds while the server load graph stays high.
- An installer or a feature that needs root, such as Discourse or a long-running background worker.
The move itself is a database export, the forum folder with attachments, and the same install on the new host. Plan it for a quiet hour, keep the old account live until the new board loads, then point the domain's DNS at the server. VPS hosting is the step after shared for most communities.
When to email support
Email support@webji.services when Softaculous fails mid-install, mail from the board lands in spam after the SMTP settings look right, or a migration needs the database moved without downtime. Include the domain, the software and the exact error line.
Email support is 24/7 in Hindi and English, with an average first reply under 60 minutes. The office phone is not a support line. WebJi shared plans are Linux, cPanel and LiteSpeed with a free SSL certificate, and the disk, CPU and process limits for each plan are shown at checkout.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best hosting for a forum?
For a new forum, a cPanel shared plan is the best value: phpBB, MyBB, SMF and Flarum all install from Softaculous, and WebJi L-Basic is ₹300 a month before 18% GST. Choose a server only for Discourse or when the account keeps hitting process limits.
Can phpBB run on shared hosting?
Yes. phpBB needs PHP and MySQL, both of which a cPanel shared account provides, and Softaculous installs it with its own database. Watch the resource graph once the board is busy, because logged-in traffic uses server processes that caching cannot absorb.
Do I need a VPS for Discourse?
Yes. Discourse ships as a Docker container, expects at least 2 GB of RAM and needs root to rebuild it on updates, so a shared cPanel account cannot run it. Budget a server of its own, not a folder on an existing plan.
How much does forum hosting cost in India?
WebJi shared hosting is ₹300 a month for L-Basic and ₹700 a month for L-Developer, both before 18% GST. The Cloud Entry server is ₹5,900 a month for 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM and 100 GB storage, also before GST.
How do I stop spam registrations on a new forum?
Turn on email verification, add a question only a human answers, approve the first few accounts by hand, and hold new members to a post limit before they can add links. Every mainstream board has a setting for each of these.
Can I move a forum to another host later?
Yes. Export the database, copy the forum folder and its attachments, then import both on the new account and update the board's URL setting. Arrange the move for a quiet hour and keep the old account until the new one loads cleanly.
