Cloud Security Challenges

Quick answer: Cloud security challenges are the ways rented infrastructure gets exposed: a database port open to the internet, one access key shared by five people, a plugin nobody patched, and payment data held in the wrong region. Most of the exposure sits in settings you control, not in the provider's hardware.

Festive Diwali scene with marigold garlands, gift boxes, diyas and a laptop with a shopping cart — cloud security challenges

What cloud security challenges are

Cloud security challenges are the ways rented infrastructure gets exposed: the building, hypervisor and network edge belong to the provider, while the accounts, code, ports and data belong to you. Most of the exposure sits in settings you control, not in the provider's hardware.

The practical list is short. A database port open to the internet. One admin password shared by a team. A plugin that has not been updated since last Diwali. A backup on the same disk as the site. Card data held in a region the RBI does not allow. None of these needs a sophisticated attacker; a scanner finds them in hours.

  • Configuration: the port, the permission, the directory listing.
  • Identity: the shared login, the key in a repository, the ex-employee account.
  • Data: where it sits, who can read it, whether a copy exists off the server.

The shared responsibility line on a rented server

The split becomes simple once it is drawn at the layer you actually touch. The provider secures the building, the hypervisor and the network edge. You secure the account, the application, the database contents and everyone who holds a password.

On shared and managed plans the line sits above the panel. On an unmanaged VPS you are the administrator, so kernel updates and firewall rules are yours. A host can hand you a hardened image; it cannot keep it hardened for you.

Misconfiguration is the first cause, not malware

A misconfiguration is a setting that exposes something the moment it is saved, with no exploit required. Three examples cover most of what we see on customer accounts:

  • A directory with no index file and listing enabled, so /backups/ shows every zip inside it.
  • A wp-config.php or .env file left readable, which hands over the database password in plain text.
  • A MySQL port opened to every address "for an afternoon" so a developer can connect from home, then never closed.

Each is fixed in a minute: disable indexes in .htaccess, move the config above the web root, allow the port to one address only. The damage happens in the days before anyone looks.

Identity is the perimeter now

Most cloud incidents start with a working credential, not a zero-day. A password reused from an old breach, an SSH key copied to a laptop that left the company, a panel login with no second factor: that is the entry point.

  1. One account per person in the panel and in billing; no shared logins.
  2. MFA on the hosting panel, the registrar and the mailbox that can reset both.
  3. SSH keys per user, password login disabled, root login refused.
  4. Secrets out of code repositories; rotate any key that was ever committed.
  5. A leaver checklist: revoke panel access, keys and mailbox on the last day.

You know the work is done when a new engineer gets their own key and nobody has to share a password to let them in.

Regulated data: BFSI and healthcare

The Reserve Bank of India requires payment card data to be stored only in India, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 governs how personal data is collected and kept. For a hospital or a lender, those rules decide the server region before they decide the software.

Three questions follow. Is the server in an Indian data centre? Is the database encrypted at rest, with the key held separately? Who can read the access log, and for how long is it kept? A clinic serving American patients also has HIPAA in scope.

No hosting plan makes a business compliant. The plan supplies an Indian region, disk encryption and an audit trail. The policy, the consent record and the retention schedule stay with you.

Exposed databases and IoT devices

A MySQL server listening on every interface and a sensor shipped with the password admin are the same mistake at two scales. Both answer anyone who finds them, and both are found by scanning, not by a targeted attack.

For the database, bind it to 127.0.0.1, allow remote access through an SSH tunnel only, and confirm from outside that port 3306 is closed. For IoT, change the default password before the device reaches the site, put devices on their own network segment, and let them send data out rather than accept connections in.

Policy fails before the tools do

A cloud security policy does not need to be long. One page that answers four questions prevents more incidents than a scanner licence: who may open a port, how often access is reviewed, which region data may sit in, and who is called when something breaks at 2 am.

Write it where the team works, not in a folder nobody opens. If the answer to "who can reach production" is a list of names nobody maintains, the policy is decoration.

What to close in the first week

Six changes cover the common exposure. Do them in this order, because each one reduces what the next can reach.

  1. Turn on MFA for the hosting panel, the registrar and the main mailbox.
  2. Create one SSH key per person and disable password login.
  3. Bind the database to localhost and close port 3306 at the firewall.
  4. Disable directory listing and move config files above the web root.
  5. Take a backup, restore it into a test directory, and open the site there.
  6. List every service actually running; remove what you cannot explain.

You know it worked when an external port scan shows only 80 and 443, the restored copy opens without errors, and the panel login asks for a second factor.

Where WebJi fits

WebJi® runs the layers above the panel: the Indian data centre, the hypervisor, the network edge, PHP versions, panel patches and the backup job. The account, the code, the plugins and the data remain yours, which is why this page spends its time on settings rather than on hardware.

When one site outgrows shared hosting, cloud hosting gives it a private environment, quoted by email before payment. For a WordPress site the WordPress security checklist is the next read, and support answers email 24/7 in Hindi and English.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest cloud security challenge?

Misconfiguration, because it exposes data without an exploit: an open port, a readable config file, a database listening on every interface. Weak identity comes second, and the two often meet on the same account.

What does shared responsibility mean on a VPS?

The provider secures the data centre, hypervisor and network edge. On an unmanaged VPS you also own the operating system, firewall and updates. On managed hosting the host patches the panel and PHP, and you still own the code, data and passwords.

Is cloud hosting less secure than a dedicated server?

No, but the blast radius differs. A rented cloud environment has provider filtering and isolated disks; a single dedicated box has nothing filtering traffic in front of it unless you pay for that. Both depend on how you configure them.

How should BFSI or healthcare data be hosted in India?

On servers in an Indian data centre, with the database encrypted at rest, access logs kept, and a retention policy you can show. RBI requires card data to be stored in India, and the DPDP Act 2023 covers personal data.

How do I check whether my database is exposed?

Look at the bind address: 127.0.0.1 keeps MySQL local, 0.0.0.0 opens it to the network. Then scan the server from outside; if 3306 answers, close it at the firewall before doing anything else.

Who fixes a hacked site, the host or me?

The host restores the platform and can supply logs; the fix to code, plugins and passwords is yours. WebJi support will tell you which file or account was used, and security services can do the cleanup on request.
