.uk Domain Registration — What You Get
.uk is the country code for the United Kingdom, created on 24 July 1985, seven months after the original generic extensions and as the first country code after .us. Nominet UK, formed in 1996, is the registry and runs the whole .uk family from Oxford.
For most of its life .uk only opened third-level names such as .co.uk; direct second-level registrations began on 10 June 2014. Terms run 1 to 10 years, with two years the traditional default when a term is not specified.
DNSSEC has been served on the .uk zone since March 2010, and the registry publishes data through RDAP rather than classic WHOIS. Names use letters, digits and hyphens under Nominet's published rules of registration; no IDN script tables are published for .uk in the IANA record, so plan on ASCII labels.
Who Can Register a .uk Domain Name
Anyone can register a .uk name from anywhere in the world, including India: the registry applies no territorial restrictions and asks only for accurate registrant details. A company, a shop or an individual gets the same first-come, first-served treatment.
When second-level .uk opened in June 2014, holders of matching .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk names registered before 28 October 2013 held a reserved right to the shorter .uk; that protection ran five years and ended in June 2019, so today every name is simply open to whoever registers it first.
- No UK address, company or citizenship is needed — an Indian registrant supplies Indian contact details.
- Nominet's field rules require a registrant name of at least 4 characters with at least 3 letters.
- Nominet may check that registrant information is accurate, so enter real details.
- First completed order wins: a name is not held while you decide.
What a .uk Domain Is Used For
A .uk address signals a UK-facing presence: it is used by British businesses, by exporters selling into the UK, and by Indian companies that want a short, familiar-looking address for British customers.
The shorter .uk has been available since 2014 and reads cleanly in print and advertising, while .co.uk remains the longer-established default that UK shoppers have typed for decades. Many businesses hold both and redirect one to the other.
For an Indian seller on UK marketplaces, a .uk or .co.uk address on contact pages and invoices reads local without needing a UK office.

.uk Renewal, Transfer and Expiry Rules
Renewals run in the same 1 to 10 year blocks at the renewal band, and reminders go to the registrant email, so keep that address reachable and use auto-renew.
Nominet's expiry timeline is exact: the name is suspended 30 days after expiry, which stops the website and email; it can still be renewed until precisely 90 days after expiry, and it drops exactly 95 days after the expiry timestamp for anyone to register.
Transfers between registrars work differently from .com: the losing registrar releases the name by changing its registry TAG, with no authorisation code and no 60-day lock. Nominet has announced a move to standard EPP transfers with transfer authorisation codes on 9 February 2027. At WebJi, .uk transfers are handled by our support desk rather than a cart transfer, so there is no separate transfer charge from us.
.uk vs .com and .in for an Indian Business
The extension is not a ranking factor: content and links decide placement. Choose by audience — .uk when the message is a British-facing shop or service, .com for a global brand, .in when Indian identity is the point.
Many Indian exporters hold a .com or .in as the main site and a .uk or .co.uk that redirects to it, so British visitors see a familiar ending and the brand is protected against near-miss registrations.
- .uk — Nominet's shorter UK code, ₹831 a year, renewal ₹1,026.
- .co.uk — same registry, longer-established commercial ending, same ₹831 a year.
- .com — global default, ₹1,380/year, renewal ₹1,480.
- .in — Indian identity, ₹1,000/year.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a .uk domain cost in India?
WebJi lists .uk at ₹831 a year for registration and ₹1,026 for renewal, read on 4 November 2026 and before 18% GST. Premium names cost more and are quoted before payment.
Can I register a .uk domain from India without a UK address?
Yes. Nominet applies no territorial restrictions, so an Indian individual or company registers with Indian contact details. Only accurate registrant information is required.
Is .uk better than .co.uk?
Both come from the same registry and neither is a ranking factor. .uk is the shorter form open since 10 June 2014; .co.uk is the longer-established ending UK shoppers have typed for decades. When .uk launched, existing .co.uk holders had the first right to the matching shorter name until June 2019.
Why does a .uk renewal cost more than the first year?
The first year is often priced lower than the renewal band. On this page that is ₹831 registration against ₹1,026 renewal, both read on 4 November 2026 and before 18% GST.
How do I transfer a .uk domain to WebJi®?
.uk transfers are done by a registrar TAG change at the registry — there is no authorisation code and no 60-day lock. At WebJi the move is handled by our support desk rather than a cart transfer, so contact support@webji.services to start it.
What happens if my .uk domain expires?
The domain is suspended 30 days after expiry, stopping website and email. It can still be renewed until exactly 90 days after expiry and is dropped 95 days after the expiry timestamp, after which anyone can register it.
Does .uk include WHOIS privacy?
Nominet's registry record shows the registrant name, and a non-trading individual can opt out of having their address displayed. Commercial registrants publish their address, so we confirm what applies to your order before you pay.
