.ru Domain Registration — What You Get

.ru is the country code for Russia, introduced on 7 April 1994 and administered by the Coordination Center for TLD RU, which accredits registrars and sets the rules; the Technical Center of Internet operates the infrastructure. The registry's own counter showed about 6,240,000 .ru domains at the time of writing, and it describes .ru as one of the largest country codes in the world.

One rule sets .ru apart from .com-style extensions: names are registered for a period of one year, and renewals are also one year at a time. A renewal can only be placed during the window that opens 60 days before expiry, so multi-year locking of a price is not possible under registry rules.

DNSSEC is supported. Names are registered at the second level directly (example.ru), and Cyrillic-script names live in a separate country code, .рф, rather than under .ru itself.

Who Can Register a .ru Domain Name

.ru is open: individuals, companies and organisations from any country can register, and no Russian citizenship or residence is required. Registrars record mandatory identity details for the registry, so an Indian buyer supplies the same kind of ID data they would for a KYC check.

One recent change matters. Industry reporting from July 2026 says that from 1 September 2026, registrations and renewals in .ru are tied to Russia's government identification system (ESIA) for Russian residents, and domains held by unverified non-Russian owners continue only until their current one-year term expires. Several Western registrars have also stopped selling .ru. Rules for foreign registrants are therefore in flux — write to our support desk before ordering so we can confirm what applies to your order that day.

  • No citizenship or residence requirement on the registry's published terms.
  • Accurate registrant identity data is mandatory; false information is prohibited by registry rules.
  • Registration and renewal terms are one year each.
  • From September 2026 Russia ties .ru to its ESIA identity system — check current practice with our support desk before ordering.

What a .ru Domain Is Used For

.ru addresses the Russian-speaking internet: Russian companies, media, marketplaces and services, plus buyers and partners across the CIS who default to Russian-language sites. It is the working choice for an Indian exporter with Russian or Central Asian customers who wants an address that reads local.

Because the Russian-language internet also uses the Cyrillic .рф code, brands targeting Russia seriously often hold the .ru as the technical default and the transliterated or Cyrillic equivalents as protection.

A .ru can also be a defensive registration: an Indian company whose trademark could be registered by a distributor holds the .ru form so nobody else can.

.ru Domain Registration Plans & Pricing (INR)

WebJi lists .ru at ₹493 a year for registration and ₹621 for renewal, read on 4 November 2026, before 18% GST. Registry rules make every term one year, so the renewal price is what each following year costs; premium names cost more and are quoted before payment.

.ru Renewal, Transfer and Expiry Rules

Renewal is one year at a time and can only be placed in the 60 days before expiry, so renewals are best left on auto-renew with a reachable registrant email. After expiry there is a short registry restoration path before the name returns to open registration.

Transfers between registrars do not use the .com auth-code cart flow. The registry runs a formal registrar-change procedure: the losing registrar issues a registry transfer code, the gaining registrar files the application at least 7 days before expiry, and the registrant confirms within 5 days. A name is locked for 30 days after it transfers in, and third-level names like .com.ru cannot be transferred at all. At WebJi, .ru transfers are handled by our support desk rather than a cart transfer, so there is no separate transfer charge from us.

.ru vs .com and .in for an Indian Business

The extension is not a ranking factor: content and links decide placement. Choose .ru only when you specifically serve Russian-speaking visitors, .com for a global brand, and .in when Indian identity is the message.

For most Indian businesses .ru is a secondary, market-specific or defensive holding rather than the main site, and its one-year registry terms mean it needs a yearly renewal decision.

  • .ru — Russian market address, ₹493 a year, renewal ₹621, 1-year terms.
  • .com — global default, ₹1,380/year, renewal ₹1,480.
  • .in — Indian identity, ₹1,000/year.

How to Register a .ru Domain with WebJi

Registration is one order, with the identity details the registry requires. Because the 2026 identification rules are new, we confirm each .ru order with you before submitting it.

Steps:

  • Search your name with the domain search box on this page; a .ru result shows free, taken or premium.
  • Enter registrant details exactly as they should appear in the registry record, with the identity data our team asks for.
  • Pay in INR by UPI, card or net-banking for a one-year term; the GST invoice is issued at once.
  • Point the nameservers at your host and allow a few hours for DNS propagation.
  • Turn on auto-renew — the registry only accepts a renewal in the 60 days before expiry, so a missed window matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a .ru domain cost in India?

WebJi lists .ru at ₹493 a year for registration and ₹621 for renewal, read on 4 November 2026 and before 18% GST. Registry rules fix every term at one year, so renewal is a yearly event at ₹621.

Can foreigners register a .ru domain?

Yes — the registry's published terms have no citizenship or residence requirement, and registrars record identity details for the registry instead. Since September 2026 Russia ties registrations and renewals to its ESIA government identity system for residents, so write to our support desk first and we will confirm what applies to a new Indian registration.

Why is a .ru domain registered for only one year?

The Coordination Center's rules register .ru names for a period of one year, with renewals also in one-year steps. A renewal can only be placed during the 60 days before expiry, which is why auto-renew matters for .ru.

Why does a .ru renewal cost more than the first year?

The first year is often priced lower than the renewal band. On this page that is ₹493 registration against ₹621 renewal, both read on 4 November 2026 and before 18% GST.

How do I transfer a .ru domain to WebJi®?

.ru transfers use the registry's registrar-change procedure: the losing registrar issues a transfer code, we file the application at least 7 days before expiry, and you confirm within 5 days. At WebJi the move is handled by our support desk rather than a cart transfer — contact support@webji.services to start it.

Is my personal information published in the .ru WHOIS?

No. Under Russian personal-data rules the registry does not publish private individuals' personal data in the public .ru WHOIS, while company names and tax identification numbers are shown through the registry's WHOIS+ service.

What is a .ru domain used for?

It is the address for the Russian-speaking internet — Russian companies, media and marketplaces — and it is used by Indian exporters and traders serving Russia or the CIS, or held defensively to protect a trademark.
