WordPress Internal Linking

Quick answer: WordPress internal linking is adding a link from one page on your site to another page on the same site. Select the words a reader would click, use the link button, and choose an existing page. Internal links help people and crawlers find pages; click-here links do less.

Add an internal link in the editor

  1. Open the post in the block editor.
  2. Select a phrase that tells the reader what the next page is. Do not select the words click here.
  3. Press the link button, start typing the page title, and choose it from the list so the URL is yours.
  4. Publish and click the phrase on the public page. It should open the page you meant, on this same domain.

An internal link looks like any other link. The address starts with your domain, or it is a path such as /pricing/. A link to another website is not internal.

What bad internal linking looks like

A page with no links pointing at it is easy for both people and crawlers to miss. Links that exist only in the footer are a weak hint about which article matters. Repeating one exact phrase on every page looks mechanical and does not help a reader choose.

Point supporting posts at the one page that should rank for that topic, and point that page back to the posts that go deeper. That is the whole pattern.

Follow or nofollow on your own pages

WordPress follow means you are not adding nofollow. For a normal page on your own site, leave the link as the editor writes it. Add nofollow only for a link you do not want to vouch for, which is rare inside your own content. Sponsored and ugc are for paid and user-generated links, not for your own guide.

Once a month, open a 404 report and fix links that still point at a deleted slug. The site those links live on is discussed on WordPress hosting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I link to another page in WordPress?

Select the words that describe the destination, click the link button, and choose an existing page from the search list.

Is internal linking good for SEO?

Yes when the links help a person go to a related page and when important pages are not left with zero links. The anchor should say what the destination is.

What does an internal link look like?

It is a normal link whose address is another URL on your domain. In the editor it is the phrase you highlighted.

Should WordPress internal links be nofollow?

No. Leave them as follow. Nofollow tells search engines you do not vouch for the target, which is the wrong signal for your own page.
