What is NVMe SSD storage?
An NVMe SSD is a solid-state drive that talks to the CPU over PCIe using the NVMe protocol instead of the older SATA bus. That change removes the 600 MB/s SATA ceiling and the single command queue, so the drive can serve thousands of small reads at once.
Three terms get mixed up. NVMe is the protocol, PCIe is the bus, and M.2 is the physical slot; a drive can be M.2 and still be SATA. An NVMe SSD is the protocol plus flash memory, in whatever form factor the server uses.
- NVMe: the command protocol designed for flash, with up to 64,000 queues and 64,000 commands per queue.
- PCIe: the bus that carries the data, usually four lanes per drive.
- M.2: a slot type; M.2 drives may be SATA or NVMe, so the slot alone tells you nothing.
- U.2 and EDSFF: server form factors for hot-swap NVMe drives.
Is NVMe better than a SATA SSD, and by how much?
Yes, on throughput and on queue depth. A SATA SSD is capped by its 6 Gb/s interface at roughly 550 MB/s and one queue of 32 commands; an NVMe drive over four PCIe lanes reaches several GB/s with thousands of queues, and the queue depth matters more than the headline number.
| Drive | Interface | Typical sequential read | Queue depth | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hard disk | SATA | 150–200 MB/s | 1 | Bulk backup and archive |
| SATA SSD | SATA 6 Gb/s | About 550 MB/s | 1 queue, 32 commands | General hosting and small sites |
| NVMe Gen3 | PCIe 3.0 x4 | About 3,500 MB/s | Up to 64,000 queues | Databases and busy sites |
| NVMe Gen4 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | About 7,000 MB/s | Up to 64,000 queues | Heavy database and build workloads |
These are typical datasheet figures. What you actually get in hosting depends on the CPU, the RAM cache and how many other accounts share the device.
IOPS and latency: the hosting metrics that matter
IOPS counts how many read or write operations a drive completes per second; latency is how long one operation takes. Hosting workloads are mostly small random reads, so a drive with deep queues and low latency beats one with a higher sequential score.
- 4K random read IOPS: the figure that tracks database and PHP session load.
- Latency in microseconds: NVMe sits in the tens of microseconds, SATA in the hundreds.
- Queue depth: NVMe keeps many requests in flight while SATA serialises them.
- Sustained write: what backups, logs and large imports depend on.
Why databases love NVMe on WordPress and WooCommerce
WordPress and WooCommerce make many small database reads per page: options, posts, meta, sessions and cart rows. On SATA each read waits its turn; on NVMe they run in parallel, so time to first byte drops on uncached pages and in the admin.
The gain is largest when the working set does not fit in RAM and the host runs no object cache. Add Redis and the database load falls, but writes, imports, backups and plugin updates still hit the disk.
What real impact does NVMe have on page speed?
NVMe shows up in uncached requests, admin pages, checkout and cron jobs, not in a cached HTML page served from memory. A site behind full-page caching and a CDN will measure almost no difference on its home page.
- Measure TTFB on a logged-out, uncached URL before and after a storage change.
- Admin and checkout pages bypass the cache, so they expose storage latency.
- Backups, plugin updates and imports finish sooner and hold the CPU for less time.
- Images, fonts and front-end scripts are unaffected; those need a CDN and compression.
NVMe hosting in India: what it costs
NVMe storage adds little to a plan price today, because the drive is a small part of the server cost. What moves the bill is the CPU, RAM and bandwidth around it, and whether the host publishes the drive model at all.
Treat "NVMe" without a generation or an IOPS figure as a marketing line: shared NVMe with noisy neighbours can behave like SATA at peak. WebJi® lists NVMe on its VPS plans and quotes a configuration by email before payment.
See VPS hosting plans for the current sizes, the SSD vs SATA comparison for the older interface, and cloud VPS if you need to resize without a migration.
How to verify your host actually uses NVMe
Ask for the drive model, then check it from inside the server. On Linux, lsblk -d -o NAME,ROTA,MODEL reports 0 under ROTA for any SSD, and nvme list returns the model and namespace for NVMe devices; if the nvme command is missing, the device is probably not NVMe.
- Run lsblk -d -o NAME,ROTA,MODEL and confirm the data disk is not rotational.
- Run nvme list and match the model string to the vendor datasheet.
- Run iostat -x 1 under load and watch %util and await on the data disk.
- Compare a 4K random read test with fio against the published IOPS.
- On shared hosting without shell access, ask support for the storage tier and IOPS limit in writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is NVMe SSD storage?
An NVMe SSD is flash storage that uses the NVMe protocol over PCIe rather than SATA. It removes the interface bottleneck, so the drive handles far more parallel random reads with lower latency.
Is NVMe faster than a normal SSD?
Yes. A normal SATA SSD tops out near 550 MB/s with a single queue, while NVMe drives reach several GB/s and thousands of queues. The gap is widest on small random reads, which is what hosting does.
Does NVMe make hosting faster?
It speeds up database reads, uncached pages, the admin, checkout and backups. It does not speed up a cached HTML page, images or front-end scripts, which depend on caching, a CDN and lighter code.
What is the difference between NVMe and SATA?
SATA is an older interface built for hard disks, limited to about 600 MB/s and one command queue. NVMe is a protocol built for flash over PCIe, with deep parallel queues and much lower latency.
How much faster is NVMe for websites?
Expect a large gain in random read IOPS and a smaller gain in page time. A cached page may improve by a few milliseconds, while an uncached database-heavy page can improve by hundreds.
Do I need NVMe hosting for WordPress?
Not for a small brochure site with caching. It pays on WooCommerce catalogues, membership sites and busy admins, where database reads dominate and the working set no longer fits in RAM.
Is WebJi® an Indian company?
Yes. WebJi® is headquartered in Jaipur, Rajasthan and has operated since 2005. Billing, support and governance all run from India.
