What cloud storage is
Cloud storage is rented disk space in someone else's data centre, reached over the internet, with extra copies so one disk failure does not erase the file.
In cloud computing, storage is where the data sits. Compute is the processing that runs a program. A phone backup, a shared office folder, and a bucket of website images are all cloud storage when the disks belong to a provider and the path to them is the internet.
You open an account and upload a file. The provider writes it to disks in a data centre. You do not buy those disks or replace a failed one. A browser, a phone app, or an API reads the file back. Building the servers yourself is a different job from signing up and uploading.
- The disks belong to the provider, not to the laptop in front of you.
- You open files in a browser, an app, or through an API.
- Extra copies mean one failed disk is not the end of the file.
- The bill is usually for space you keep, plus data you download.
Object, block, and file cloud storage
Cloud storage is not one layout. Object, block, and file storage organise the same rented disks in different ways.

| Dimension | Object (S3-style) | Block | File (NFS/SMB) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access | HTTP URLs, API | Raw volume on one VM | Shared filesystem mount |
| Best for | Backups, images, archives, static assets | OS disks, databases | Shared team folders, media |
| Latency | Higher (HTTP) | Lowest, random reads | Moderate |
| Install an OS on it? | No | Yes | No |
| Many servers at once | Yes (API) | No | Yes |
Use object storage for backups, images, and archives you fetch by a web address. Use block storage for a boot disk or a database. Use file storage when several computers must read one shared folder.
Personal, public, private, and hybrid cloud storage
Personal cloud storage is the copy that syncs from a phone or laptop, such as a photo library. It is built for one person. It is not a company server, and it is not a gadget you plug in at home. The disks stay in the provider's data centre.
Public cloud storage rents space on infrastructure many customers share. You cannot read their files. Private cloud storage is reserved for one organisation, in that organisation's own facility or hosted for them. Hybrid cloud storage keeps some data private and some on a public service.
A home user usually wants personal storage. A business that must control layout and access looks at private or hybrid storage. Private cloud hosting is the compute side of that choice, not the bucket of files.
How cloud storage differs from cloud hosting
Cloud storage holds files. Cloud hosting runs a website or an application on servers you rent. A photo archive does not need a web server. A shop with a database does.
Object storage can serve a static file, such as an image or a download, over HTTP. It does not run PHP, hold a database, or take a payment. For that, use cloud hosting, and keep media or backups in storage beside it.
How redundancy protects data in cloud storage
A single disk fails. Cloud storage stays readable because the provider keeps more than one copy, often on separate machines, and sometimes in more than one building. If one copy is lost, another copy is still there.
Encryption is a separate control. Encryption in transit scrambles the file while it moves over the internet. Encryption at rest scrambles it on the disk. Neither one replaces access control: a password, a key, or a signed request still decides who may read the file.
Safety is not automatic. A provider breach, a stolen login, or a sync that overwrites a good file with a bad one can still damage data. Keep a backup that is not the only copy inside the same account.
Benefits and limits of cloud storage
Businesses use cloud storage because the files are reachable from more than one place, capacity can grow without a shelf of new disks, and a fire in one office need not be the only copy.
- Open the same files from a browser or an app, without carrying the disk.
- Let more than one person work from a shared folder.
- Grow capacity by changing the plan, not by installing hardware.
- Keep a copy away from the office in case the office copy fails.
The limits are real. You need a working internet connection. On a public service, the provider's staff and software sit between you and the disks. Moving a large archive to another provider can be slow, and a low storage rate can hide a high charge for downloading the data later.
Paying for space you use, instead of buying every disk up front, is the cost shift people mean by the economic side of cloud storage. It is not free. The download charge, and the time to move data out, belong in the same sum.
How cloud storage billing works
Two meters usually appear on a public cloud storage bill. Storage is the charge for gigabytes you keep for a month. Egress is the charge for gigabytes sent out to the internet. Uploads are often free. Some services also charge per request when you store millions of tiny files.
A large archive can cost more to download once than it cost to keep for a year. Before you commit, price the day you restore the files, not the day you upload them.
WebJi® does not publish a generic per-gigabyte cloud storage rate. Backup space is quoted by email at support@webji.services before you pay. Where this site prints a hosting price, that price is before 18% GST.
What cloud storage is used for
The common jobs are backups, media libraries, and static files. A backup you have never restored is only a hope. Keep that copy off the same server that hosts the site, and restore the files and the database together so they match.
Server backup solutions are the usual first step for a site already on a host. Media teams park video and photos in object storage. A static site can serve HTML and images from object storage. A dynamic site still needs a host.
Photographers usually want a second copy of large files and a way to share a gallery. There is no single best cloud storage for that job. Use the table above to pick object storage or a personal sync, then check the restore charge and which country holds the copies.
Free migration of an existing site onto WebJi® is available subject to terms and approval. Open a ticket before the old host deletes the account. It is not instant, and it is not guaranteed.
Cloud storage and data residency in India
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act leaves you responsible for personal data you collect. A contract or a sector rule may also name a country. Cloud storage does not pick that country for you. The provider's region setting does.
Ask which country holds the disks before you upload customer lists, invoices, or ID scans. A sync app on a laptop may send files to a default region you never opened.
WebJi®'s registered office is in Jaipur. That office is not a walk-in branch and not a data centre you can visit. About 99% of clients are served online. The DPDP compliance page states how this site treats the Act.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is cloud storage and how does it work?
Cloud storage keeps files on a provider's disks and lets you open them over the internet. You upload a file, the provider stores extra copies, and a browser, app, or API reads it back.
Is cloud storage safe for business files?
Extra copies and encryption reduce the chance that one disk failure or a sniff on the network destroys the file. They do not stop a stolen password or a sync that overwrites a good file. Keep another backup outside that account.
What is the difference between object, block, and file storage?
Object storage is for files you fetch by a web address, such as backups and images. Block storage is a disk for one virtual machine, including boot volumes and databases. File storage is a shared folder several computers mount at once.
How much does cloud storage cost in India?
No single per-gigabyte cloud storage rate applies to every provider. Public cloud bills usually charge for space kept and again for data downloaded. WebJi® quotes backup space by email at support@webji.services before you pay. Printed hosting prices on this site are before 18% GST.
Can I host a website on cloud storage?
Object storage can serve a static file such as an image or a download. It cannot run PHP, hold a database, or take a payment. A normal website needs cloud hosting, with storage used beside it for media or backups.
Does India's DPDP Act affect where cloud storage sits?
You stay responsible for personal data you collect. Confirm which country holds the disks before you upload customer files. WebJi®'s Jaipur address is the registered office, not a data centre you can visit.
What is the difference between cloud storage and cloud hosting?
Cloud storage holds files. Cloud hosting runs the site or the app on rented servers. An archive does not need a web server. A shop with a database does.
Why should I use cloud storage?
Use it when you need the files from more than one place, room to grow without buying disks, or a copy that survives a failure in the office. You still need internet, and a cheap storage rate can hide a costly download.
