What Is Anchor Text

Quick answer: Anchor text is the visible, clickable words inside a link, and search engines read them as a label for the page you point at. "cPanel hosting" in a sentence is anchor text; "click here" is anchor text too, and a worse one.

What anchor text is

Anchor text is the visible, clickable words inside a link. In HTML it sits between the tags, as in <a href="/cpanel-hosting/">cPanel hosting</a>, where "cPanel hosting" is the anchor and the rest is the machine part. Search engines read those words as a label for the destination.

The label matters twice: a reader decides whether to click from it, and a crawler uses it as one clue about what the target page covers. A page linked fifty times as "click here" arrives with no topical label at all.

  • The anchor is text, not the URL. The URL is the href.
  • An image link has no words, so its alt text becomes the anchor.
  • The same destination can carry different anchors on different pages, and usually should.

The eight types, with examples

Every link you write or earn falls into one of these. The mix is what looks natural, not any single type.

A healthy internal profile leans on exact and partial match, because you know what the target page is about. A healthy external profile leans on branded and naked URLs, because that is how people actually cite a business.

How Google uses anchor text now

Anchor text is one signal among many, and a weaker one than it was fifteen years ago. The 2012 Penguin update targeted sites whose inbound links repeated one keyword phrase, and Google has since leaned more on the surrounding paragraph and the page itself.

That does not make the words irrelevant. It makes repetition the risk: fifty identical anchors pointing at one page look manufactured whether a person or a script wrote them.

The practical rule for a small Indian business site: use the phrase once or twice in internal links, then vary it. "cPanel hosting", "hosting with cPanel" and "the cPanel plan" all describe the same page honestly.

Internal anchors are the part you control

You cannot choose the words other sites use. You can choose every internal link, which is why internal anchors are worth fixing first.

  • One phrase per destination. If three pages all link to your pricing page as "pricing", that is fine; if five pages link to five different pages as "services", the label stops meaning anything.
  • Link the words a reader would search for, not "read more". The sentence around the link should still make sense without it.
  • Do not point two of your own pages at the same phrase. Competing anchors send readers to the wrong page and split the signal.

Navigation and breadcrumbs count as anchors too. A menu item called "Hosting" on forty pages is forty branded-generic anchors, and it is why your home page rarely needs another one.

Add an anchor in WordPress and check it

The block editor makes this a three-click job. The check takes one more and catches most mistakes.

  1. Select the words you want to become the link, for example "cPanel hosting".
  2. Click the link icon in the toolbar, or press Ctrl and K.
  3. Paste the destination URL and press Enter.
  4. Hover the finished link: the status bar should show the URL you pasted, not a redirect.

You know it is right when the words describe the destination, the hover shows the expected address, and the sentence still reads aloud without the link. If the words are "click here", rewrite the sentence so a real phrase fits.

Repair an over-optimised anchor profile

The symptom is easy to spot in Search Console or any backlink tool: one phrase dominates the anchors pointing at a money page. The cause is usually a template, a directory listing, or a batch of paid links written to one phrase.

Start with what you control. Rewrite the internal links that carry the repeated phrase, one page at a time, and let the destination keep its title. Then look outward: if the repeats come from directories you paid for, remove or vary them rather than buying more.

Do not disavow on a hunch. A disavow file tells Google to ignore links, and a wrong entry can cost you the good ones with it. Fix the site first, wait a quarter, and read the anchors again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is anchor text in SEO?

It is the visible, clickable words in a link. Search engines treat those words as a label for the page being linked, so a descriptive phrase helps and a generic one wastes the opportunity.

What are the types of anchor text?

Branded, brand plus keyword, exact match, partial match, related keyword, naked URL, generic and image alt text. Most natural profiles mix several, with branded and naked links dominating from other sites and descriptive phrases used internally.

Does anchor text affect rankings?

It is one signal, and a weaker one than before the 2012 Penguin update. It still helps search engines understand the destination, but surrounding text, page content and link quality now carry more of the decision.

Is exact-match anchor text risky?

Once or twice, no. Repeated across many links to one page, yes, because that pattern is the one Penguin was built to catch. Vary the phrase and let branded links do the heavy lifting.

How should I write internal link anchors?

Use the words a reader would search for, keep them short, and make sure the sentence still works if the link is removed. Point one phrase at one page, and do not reuse the same phrase for a different destination.

What is anchor text over-optimisation?

It is a profile where one keyword phrase supplies most of the anchors to a page, usually from paid directories or a template. The fix is to rewrite the internal links, vary or remove the paid ones, and avoid disavowing until you have looked at the list.
