What does minify CSS and JS change?
Minify CSS and JS means WordPress sends the same rules and the same scripts with the gaps, line breaks, and comments taken out. The browser still applies the stylesheet and still runs the script. It does not compress images, cache the HTML, or change what a button does.
An online compressor that you paste one file into is a different job. WordPress loads many stylesheets and scripts from the theme and from plugins. A cache plugin minifies those files when the page is built. Editing a theme file by hand gets overwritten on the next update.
- Spaces, line breaks, and comments come out.
- The rules and the script behaviour stay.
- Images, the HTML cache, and plugin features are separate jobs.
How do you turn minify on in LiteSpeed Cache?
On WordPress hosting from WebJi®, LiteSpeed Cache is the plugin that should do this. Do not add a second minify plugin on the same site. Two of them rewrite the same files, and the layout breaks for no gain.
Stay logged in on this browser. Open the public homepage in another tab so you can compare. Work through the list once, then stop and check.
- In wp-admin, open LiteSpeed Cache, then Page Optimization. On CSS Settings, set CSS Minify to ON. Save. Do not turn on CSS Combine yet.
- Open JS Settings. Set JS Minify to ON. Leave JS Combine and Load JS Deferred off. Save.
- In the admin bar, open LiteSpeed Cache and choose Purge All.
- In a private window, load the homepage. Fonts, the menu, and buttons should match the tab you left open.
If LiteSpeed Cache is not in the menu, the account is not on that server stack. Use one other plugin, not several. In Autoptimize, open Settings, then Autoptimize, tick Optimize JavaScript Code and Optimize CSS Code, leave Aggregate JS-files and Aggregate CSS-files unticked, save, and empty its cache. Run the same private-window check.
What should stay off until the page matches?
| Setting | What it does | When to turn it on |
|---|---|---|
| CSS Minify | Drops spaces and comments in stylesheets | First |
| JS Minify | Drops spaces and comments in scripts | With CSS Minify, in the same pass |
| Combine | Joins many files into one | Only after the private window still matches, and only if many tiny files remain |
| Defer or async | Waits to run scripts until after the first paint | Last. Sliders and menus often fail here |
Combine is not minify. Minify makes each file shorter. Combine changes the order plugins expect. On a site that already uses HTTP/2, one fat file is often slower than a few short ones. Defer waits to run scripts. Turn it on only after minify alone has passed.
What do you exclude when the layout breaks?
If spacing collapses, colours vanish, or a slider stops, the last switch you enabled touched a file that needed its original form. Turn that switch off, purge, and reload the private window. When the page matches again, you have found the switch. Change one switch at a time.
Open the browser console on the broken page and note the script or stylesheet named in the red error. On JS Settings, paste that file into JS Excludes. On CSS Settings, use CSS Excludes. Turn the minify switch back on, purge, and reload. The named file stays as the plugin shipped it. The other files stay minified.
Do this on a staging copy when the site takes orders. Retest the checkout or the payment button. A script on that page is easy to break and easy to miss if you only look at the homepage.
How do you know the smaller files loaded?
A private window that looks right is only half the check. In that window, open the browser Network panel, reload, and filter by CSS, then by JS. Each file should return status 200. Its size should be smaller than before you saved, or the URL should be a cached copy under wp-content/litespeed rather than the original theme path.
If the size did not change, the old file is still cached. Choose Purge All again, then reload the private window. If the page is blank, turn JS Minify off, purge, and reload before you touch another switch.
A lab score is optional. The pass mark is a matching layout plus smaller CSS and JS responses. A higher score with a broken menu is a fail.
When should WebJi do this?
Do this yourself when you can open wp-admin and you have a quiet hour. Email support@webji.services when the console names a file you cannot find, or the layout is still wrong after JS Minify is off and the cache is purged. The mailbox is staffed 24/7 in Hindi and English. The office phone is not the support line.
A full pass across images, cache, and scripts is the WordPress speed optimization service. This page has no price for that work. It is quoted by email before you pay. Minify alone is a setting. It is not that whole job.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I minify CSS and JS in WordPress?
Open LiteSpeed Cache, then Page Optimization. Set CSS Minify and JS Minify to ON, leave combine and defer off, and choose Purge All. A private window should show the same layout, with smaller CSS and JS files.
Does minifying CSS and JS make WordPress faster?
It cuts the bytes in those files, which helps on a slow connection. It does not shrink images or fix a heavy plugin. Turn minify on first. Add combine or defer only after the layout still matches.
Should I combine CSS and JavaScript as well?
Not in the first pass. Combine merges files and can change the order a plugin expects. Leave it off until CSS Minify and JS Minify already pass in a private window.
Why did my design break after minifying?
A stylesheet or script needed its original form. Turn off the last switch, purge, and reload. Exclude the file named in the browser console, then turn minify back on for the other files.
Can I minify CSS and JS without a plugin?
Only for a file you maintain yourself. Pasting a theme stylesheet into an online compressor is overwritten on the next theme update. WordPress should minify the files it enqueues, and that is a cache plugin's job.
What if LiteSpeed Cache is not installed?
Use one plugin, Autoptimize. Tick Optimize JavaScript Code and Optimize CSS Code, leave the aggregate boxes off, save, and empty the cache. Do not run two minify plugins together.
