What a local SEO checklist changes in Google Maps results
A local SEO checklist is the ordered set of fixes that decide whether your business appears in the Google map pack for a nearby search. Google ranks those results on relevance, distance and prominence, so the checklist concentrates on the two you control and leaves proximity alone.
Relevance comes from the category, the services listed and the words on your pages. Prominence comes from reviews, citations, links and how complete the listing is. Distance is set by where the searcher stands, and no amount of profile work moves it.
| Phase | What you finish | How you know it worked |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Profile | Claimed and verified listing, one narrow primary category, every field filled | The profile shows Verified and every section complete |
| 2. Citations | One name, address and phone format on 15–25 Indian directories | JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and Bing Places carry the same phone |
| 3. Reviews | An ask-at-handover routine and a reply within 48 hours | New reviews arrive monthly and every one has an answer |
| 4. On-site | Service and city in title, H1 and first paragraph, plus LocalBusiness JSON-LD | Rich Results Test passes and the city page is indexed |
| 5. Pages and links | A unique page per city and five to ten local links | Each city page ranks for its own city query |
Work the five phases in that order over about a week for setup, then keep a monthly rhythm. The Google Business Profile guide covers phase 1 in depth; the sections below carry each remaining phase to its own test.
Phase 1: Google Business Profile setup for Indian businesses
Claim the listing in Google Maps while signed in, pick the narrowest accurate primary category, and finish verification. In India Google usually asks for a video of the signboard, the street outside and the interior, so record all three in one take.
Fill hours including holidays, the phone number in one +91 format, and every service with the words customers use. The description holds up to 750 characters, but Google truncates it in results, so the first 250 characters carry the message. Add 10–15 real photos of the exterior, interior and finished work, then refresh them monthly.
Keep ownership of the profile yourself and add any agency as a manager. Before optimising anything, check for duplicate listings left by old directories, because two listings split the reviews and the signals.

Phase 2: NAP consistency and Indian directory citations
Use one format for name, address and phone on every listing, then claim the directories Indian customers actually check: JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Fifteen to twenty-five accurate listings beat a hundred auto-generated ones.
Copy the address exactly as it appears on your signboard and GST records, including the pin code, and never change the phone format between sites. A listing that says "Rd" on one directory and "Road" on another is a mismatch Google has to reconcile.
- Core set — JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect.
- Industry set — Practo for clinics, Zomato for restaurants, 99acres for property, IndiaMART for wholesalers.
- Local set — chamber of commerce, market association, the local newspaper's business directory.
- Clean-up — merge or suppress duplicates, and close listings for old addresses.
Phase 3: Google reviews and response workflow
Ask once at handover with a direct review link, reply to every review within 48 hours, and never pay for one. Volume and recency both feed prominence, so a steady monthly flow beats a burst before a festival.
Print the review link as a QR code at the counter, and give staff one sentence to say rather than a script that sounds rehearsed. Reply in the language the review was written in, thank the reviewer by name, and take a complaint to a phone call instead of arguing in public.
Google's policy bans incentives, so a discount for a five-star review puts the profile at risk. A review you have to remove is worse than one you never received.
Phase 4: On-site local signals and LocalBusiness schema
Put the service and the city in the title, H1 and first paragraph of each location page, and add LocalBusiness JSON-LD with the same name, address, phone and hours the profile shows. Google cross-checks those values against the listing.
Use the most specific type that fits, such as LocalBusiness or a subtype, and include address, telephone, openingHours, areaServed and sameAs links to the profile and social pages. Validate the block with the Rich Results Test before you publish, because a broken parse is ignored.
Embed a map on the contact page and keep the address in text, not only inside the image. Internal links from service pages to the city page tell Google which page owns the place.
Phase 5: City pages and local link building
Give each city its own page with local proof, then earn five to ten links from local sources: a chamber of commerce, a sponsor page, a city publication. One relevant local link does more than fifty directory entries.
A city page needs the areas covered, the landmarks people use to give directions, the work you have done nearby and a phone number that reaches that team. Copying the same text with the city swapped creates pages that compete with each other.
For links, start with organisations you already pay or belong to: the market association, the school you sponsor, the event you supply. A backlink from a page that names your city and your trade carries more weight than a generic guest post.
Tracking local rankings and map pack position
Track three numbers each month: map pack position for five city keywords, calls and direction requests from the profile, and the number of new reviews. Grid tools sample from a fixed point, so read the trend rather than one day's rank.
Google Business Profile insights show calls, direction requests and profile views. Search Console shows which city queries reach your pages, and Analytics shows which of those pages produce enquiries. Put the three in one monthly note so the next edit follows the evidence.
WebJi® runs this checklist for clients as part of its local SEO services; the scope names the pages and the cities in writing before work starts, and no one can sell a guaranteed rank.
Local SEO checklist FAQs
How do I do local SEO step by step?
Work five phases in order: claim and verify the Google Business Profile, fix name, address and phone across 15–25 Indian directories, start a review routine, add city terms and LocalBusiness schema to the site, then build one page per city with a few local links.
What is a complete local SEO checklist?
A complete checklist covers the profile, citations, reviews, on-site signals and local links, and each item has a test: verified status, one phone number everywhere, a reply on every review, a passing Rich Results test and an indexed city page.
How do I rank in the Google map pack?
Match the query with the right primary category, keep the listing complete and reviewed, and make the website name and city agree with the profile. Distance sets the outer limit, and no agency can promise a specific position.
How do I get my business on Google Maps?
Search the business name in Google Maps while signed in, choose Claim this business and complete verification. In India Google usually asks for a video showing the signboard, the street and the interior; postcard verification is slower.
Do reviews really help local ranking?
Yes. Reviews are a prominence signal, and both volume and how recently they arrive count. Reply to every review within 48 hours, and never offer a discount or gift in exchange for one.
What are NAP citations?
NAP citations are listings of your name, address and phone on other sites, such as JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and Bing Places. They must use one format, because mismatches split the trust signals Google reads.
