Jellyfin vs Plex

Quick answer: Choose Jellyfin for a small VPS: it is free, needs no cloud account, and includes hardware transcoding. Choose Plex when remote sharing with family has to work without a reverse proxy, and accept that hardware transcoding sits behind Plex Pass. WebJi is neither project and does not support their software.

How to choose between Jellyfin and Plex

Choose Jellyfin for a small VPS: it is free, needs no account, and hardware transcoding is included. Choose Plex when remote sharing with family has to work without a reverse proxy, and accept that hardware transcoding sits behind Plex Pass.

  • Jellyfin if you control the network, want no cloud account, and will set up HTTPS once.
  • Plex if the people watching are not technical and live in different cities.
  • Either one if the library is direct-play friendly and the server has upload bandwidth to spare.
  • Neither is a content source. Point it only at media you have the right to use.

Jellyfin and Plex compared on facts that do not change

The interface screenshots age quickly. Licence, account model, transcoding paywall and remote access do not.

What each one actually costs

Jellyfin has no paid tier. Every feature in the table above is available without payment, and the project is funded by donations rather than licences.

Plex Pass is a paid subscription that unlocks hardware transcoding, mobile sync and the music features. Its price and term have changed more than once, and the comparison articles ranking today quote different numbers, so check Plex's own pricing page before you buy rather than trusting a figure copied into a blog.

The cost that never appears on a pricing page is time. Jellyfin's remote access and hardware acceleration need configuration, and that work lands on whoever runs the server.

Remote access: relay server or reverse proxy

Plex connects a remote client through its own relay service, which is why a relative can sign in from another city with no router changes. Jellyfin has no relay, so you publish it yourself.

  1. Easiest for a VPS: put nginx in front of Jellyfin on port 8096 and issue a certificate with certbot.
  2. Most private: install Tailscale or WireGuard and let viewers join the private network instead of opening a port.
  3. Cheapest: forward one port on the router and accept that the world can reach the login page.

On a VPS the reverse proxy route is short, because the server already has a public IP and you control the firewall. That is one reason Jellyfin suits a rented server more than a home connection.

Hardware transcoding on a VPS without a GPU

Both apps transcode in software when a client cannot play the original file, and both are slow at it. A 1080p software transcode costs roughly one modern core; 4K costs several.

Hardware encoding needs an Intel iGPU with Quick Sync, an NVIDIA card with NVENC, or AMD with VA-API. Most budget VPS plans expose none of them, so the practical answer on a CPU-only server is to keep files in a format the client plays natively and avoid transcoding altogether.

Where the hardware does exist, Jellyfin uses it without a licence. Plex requires Plex Pass first, then the same hardware.

Client apps decide it for most families

Plex ships native apps on more televisions, streaming boxes and consoles, and the experience is consistent. Jellyfin covers the web, Android, iOS, Android TV and Roku, and leans on community clients for the rest.

If the household is one technical person plus a smart TV, either works. If five relatives across three cities have to install something and remember a login, Plex removes more support calls, and that convenience is what Plex Pass is really selling.

What either one needs on an Indian VPS

Direct play of one 1080p stream fits 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM. Two simultaneous software transcodes need two cores and 4 GB. The library lives on disk, and metadata and thumbnails add tens of gigabytes on a large collection.

Upload bandwidth is the ceiling that gets ignored. One 1080p stream runs 8 to 25 Mbps, so three remote viewers can need 60 Mbps of upload, which most Indian home connections do not have. A server in an Indian datacenter removes that constraint, which is why the Plex install guide assumes a rented VPS rather than a spare PC at home.

WebJi hosts the server, not the software

WebJi is a hosting company in Jaipur, not Plex, not Jellyfin, and not affiliated with either project. We provide the VPS, the network and the invoice; the applications, their updates and their bugs belong to those projects, and their own documentation is the place to ask application questions.

Plex hosting and VPS hosting are quoted by email before payment, sized from the number of streams and the size of the library rather than a fixed plan name.

When to email WebJi about the server

Email support@webji.services when the server will not boot, a port stays closed after the firewall rule, or the bandwidth cap is reached. Support is 24/7 by email in Hindi and English, with an average first reply under 60 minutes. The office phone is business hours only and is not a support line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jellyfin really free?

Yes. It is GPLv2 open source with no paid tier, and hardware transcoding is included. Your costs are the server, the storage and the time spent configuring remote access.

Does Plex work without an internet connection?

Plex signs users in through plex.tv, so a new login needs internet even when the server is on the same network. Jellyfin authenticates against your own server and keeps working offline.

Which one is lighter on a VPS?

Jellyfin, mainly because the web interface and background tasks use less CPU during scans. Both idle in the low hundreds of megabytes of RAM, so memory rarely decides it.

Can I run Plex and Jellyfin on the same VPS?

Yes. They use different ports, 32400 and 8096, and can index the same media folders. Run one at a time first to see which transcode and scan load the server can carry.

Does WebJi support Plex or Jellyfin?

No. WebJi provides the server and the network only. Application problems go to the Plex or Jellyfin project, and WebJi is not affiliated with either.
