How to Install a WordPress Theme

Quick answer: Log in to wp-admin as an administrator. Open Appearance, then Themes, and install from the directory or upload the theme ZIP. Click Activate when that button appears. The home page should show the new layout. If the dashboard upload fails, put the folder that contains style.css into wp-content/themes.

Sealed cardboard moving boxes with a laptop in an office hallway, symbolising website migration — how to install wordpress theme

A WordPress theme is installed from Appearance, then Themes. Search the directory or upload the ZIP, then click Activate. The home page should show the new layout. If the upload fails, put the folder that contains style.css in wp-content/themes and activate it from the list.

Which path installs the theme?

A theme is the template set that controls layout and type. Installing it does not write your pages. WordPress has to be running first. If there is no dashboard yet, install WordPress on WordPress hosting, then return here.

Use the directory when the theme is free on WordPress.org. Use Upload Theme when you already have an installable ZIP. Use the folder inside wp-content/themes when the dashboard upload fails or Add New is missing.

A WordPress.com dashboard can label the button Install new theme, and it may allow uploads only on a paid plan. This guide is the self-hosted screen: Appearance, then Themes, then Add New.

PathUse it whenFinished when
DirectoryThe theme is listed free on WordPress.orgActivate is clicked and the home page layout changes
ZIP uploadYou have the ZIP that contains only the themeInstall Now succeeds and you click Activate
Manual folderThe dashboard upload fails or Add New is missingThe theme is in the list and you activate it

How do you install a theme from the directory?

This path is for a free theme in the WordPress.org directory. Stay inside wp-admin. You do not download a ZIP first.

  1. Log in at /wp-admin/ as an Administrator. An Editor account does not get the install controls.
  2. Open Appearance, then Themes, then Add New.
  3. Search the theme name, or filter by feature. Use Preview if you want to see it on your content before installing.
  4. Click Install. When the button changes to Activate, click Activate.
  5. Open the site in a new tab. A different header, type, or homepage layout means this theme is the one visitors see.

Posts, pages, and the media library stay. Menus and widgets often need to be assigned again under Appearance. That is a layout reset, not deleted content.

How do you upload a theme ZIP?

Use this when a shop or a developer gave you a ZIP. Leave the file zipped. WordPress unpacks it during Install Now.

If the download offers several files, take the ZIP that contains only the theme. Leave the documentation bundle, the license file, and any ZIP packed inside another ZIP.

  1. Download the ZIP that contains only the theme and do not unzip it.
  2. Open Appearance, then Themes, then Add New, then Upload Theme.
  3. Choose the file and click Install Now.
  4. Click Activate on the result screen, or activate later from Appearance, then Themes.

Installed is not the same as live. The public site changes only after you click Activate. An inactive theme stays in the list and does nothing to the homepage.

How do you install a WordPress theme manually?

Install the theme manually when Upload Theme reports an error, the ZIP is larger than the dashboard allows, or Add New is missing. You still finish by activating it in wp-admin.

Open the hosting panel with the steps in how to access cPanel. In File Manager, open the WordPress root, then wp-content, then themes. On a normal account the root is public_html. If WordPress lives in a subfolder, open that folder instead.

  1. Unzip on your computer. Confirm style.css is inside the theme folder, beside the other theme files, not buried in a second folder.
  2. In File Manager, upload that folder into wp-content/themes, or upload the ZIP there and click Extract. The theme folder must be a direct child of themes.
  3. In wp-admin, open Appearance, then Themes. Click Activate on the new theme.
  4. Reload the public site. The layout change is the confirmation.

Prefer SFTP on port 22 if you use a desktop client. Plain FTP on port 21 sends the password in the clear. The remote directory is still wp-content/themes.

How do you know the theme is active?

The theme is active when Appearance, then Themes, marks it Active, and a private window on the home page shows its layout rather than the previous one.

An empty-looking homepage can still mean the install worked. Many themes ship without your text. Choose a static homepage under Settings, then Reading, or add a page.

Editing the blocks is the next job, in the Gutenberg blocks guide. Colors and menus sit under Appearance, then Customize, or in the Site Editor when the theme is built from blocks.

Change theme PHP files or the theme stylesheet only inside a child theme. An update of the parent theme replaces those files. Customizer and Site Editor changes are stored outside the theme folder, so an update does not wipe them.

Should you import the demo content?

A demo import is not required to finish the install. The theme can be Active with none of the sample pages. The import copies the seller's pages, images, and settings, and it can replace a homepage you already built.

Run it only on a new site, or after a backup you can restore. For a WordPress export file, open Tools, then Import, then WordPress. If the theme asks for its own importer, install that plugin from the theme notice and stop when the homepage matches the demo, or when you decide to build the pages yourself.

An Envato template kit is a plugin that imports layouts. It is not the theme ZIP. Install and activate the theme first, then use the kit only if you still want the sample layouts.

What do you do when the theme will not install?

Read the sentence on the screen before you upload the same file again.

  • Missing style.css: you uploaded the outer package. Zip only the folder that contains style.css and upload that file.
  • No Add New button: you are not an Administrator, or the host blocked dashboard file changes. Use an admin user, or the manual folder method.
  • The file exceeds the upload limit: leave the theme intact and use the manual folder method. The cap is the account upload size.
  • The site is blank after Activate: rename the new theme folder in wp-content/themes and activate a default theme that is already installed.

A white screen right after Activate usually means the theme expects a newer PHP version than the account is running. Rename that theme folder under wp-content/themes so WordPress can fall back, then activate a default theme already in the list. Raise PHP only if the theme readme names a version the host lets you select.

The theme author supports that theme's code. WebJi® can help when cPanel or the upload limit blocks the file. Email support@webji.services. The mailbox is staffed 24/7 in Hindi and English, and the average first reply is under 60 minutes. The office phone is not a support line.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install a WordPress theme?

Log in as an administrator, open Appearance, then Themes, then Add New, and install from the directory or Upload Theme. Click Activate. The home page layout should change.

How do I install a theme from a ZIP file?

Keep the ZIP closed. Open Appearance, then Themes, then Add New, then Upload Theme, choose the file, and click Install Now, then Activate. The first folder inside the ZIP must contain style.css.

How do I install a WordPress theme manually?

Unzip on your computer so style.css sits in the theme folder. Upload that folder to wp-content/themes with the file manager or SFTP. Then open Appearance, then Themes, and click Activate.

Why is the Add New button missing?

The login is not an Administrator, or the host has blocked file changes from the dashboard. Sign in as an admin, or upload the theme folder with the file manager and activate it from the theme list.

Will a new theme delete my pages?

No. Posts, pages, and media stay in the database. Menus, widgets, and design settings often need to be chosen again. Activate the previous theme to restore the old layout.

Do I have to import the demo content?

No. The theme is installed when it shows as Active and the public home page uses its layout. Import a demo only on a new site, or after a backup, because it can replace the homepage.

What does a missing style.css error mean?

The ZIP is the seller's outer package, not the theme. Find the folder that contains style.css, zip only that folder, and upload the new ZIP.
