How to Host a Website Without a Domain Name

Quick answer: Host a site with no domain by publishing to a temporary address: a free yoursite.webji.in subdomain, the cPanel preview URL http://SERVER-IP/~username/, or the raw server IP. All three serve your files, none gives you branded email or your own SSL, and you can attach a real domain later without reinstalling.

What you get when you publish without a domain

Hosting and a domain are separate purchases. Hosting stores your files and answers requests; a domain is the name people type. Without a domain, the server still answers on an IP address, a provider subdomain or a panel preview link, so the site works while you decide on a name.

  • Hosting is storage and delivery. It works the moment files land in the document root.
  • A domain is a DNS record pointing at that server. It can be added at any time.
  • Every server already has an IP address, which is enough for a browser to load a page.

That separation is why the answer is yes. Nothing about serving a page needs a purchased name. What you give up without one is covered further down.

Option 1: use the free subdomain on your hosting account

A hosting account can publish at a name the provider already owns, such as yoursite.webji.in. Ask support to create the subdomain for the account, then point it at the folder holding the site, usually public_html. WebJi manages the DNS record, so the name resolves without you touching a registrar.

Because it is a real hostname, a free Let's Encrypt certificate can be issued for it. That gives you HTTPS on a temporary address, which neither the preview URL nor the bare IP can do.

If the site itself does not exist yet, WordPress or the website builder in cPanel creates pages without code, and the subdomain points at that install. The address is temporary; the content is not thrown away when the domain arrives.

Option 2: open the cPanel preview URL

cPanel publishes every account at a preview address built from the server IP and your cPanel username: http://SERVER-IP/~username/. It is the fastest way to check a site before any DNS exists.

  1. Log in to cPanel for the account. The billing client area is a different login.
  2. In the GENERAL INFORMATION panel on the right, copy Current IP Address and the username shown above it.
  3. Build the URL as http:// followed by the IP, then /~, then the username, then a trailing slash.
  4. Load it in a private window. You know it worked when the same index file that sits in public_html appears.

Two limits apply. The certificate is issued to a hostname, so the preview URL is HTTP only. Some server configurations disable the ~username path for security, and then the link returns 404 even though the site is fine.

Option 3: serve the site from the server IP

On a VPS or dedicated server with no host header configured, http://SERVER-IP loads the default virtual host, which serves the document root directly. That is enough to confirm a fresh install before DNS is ready.

On shared hosting the IP is shared by every account on the machine, so a bare IP may open someone else's site. Use the preview URL there instead. Neither route gives you HTTPS, and neither is an address you can print on a card.

Test the domain you plan to buy with a hosts file

A hosts file lets your computer resolve a domain to your server while the rest of the internet still sees the old one. It is how you check a migration before changing nameservers.

  • Windows: open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts as Administrator and add SERVER-IP example.com, then the same line for www.
  • macOS and Linux: edit /etc/hosts with sudo and add the same two lines.
  • Flush the cache after saving: ipconfig /flushdns on Windows, sudo dscacheutil -flushcache on macOS.

Remove the lines when the test ends. A forgotten entry is the usual reason a site looks correct on your laptop and broken everywhere else.

What domain-free hosting cannot do

These gaps are about identity and trust, not about whether the site loads. They matter more as the site grows.

NeedWithout a domain
A mailbox on your own domainNot possible. Mailboxes are tied to a domain you control.
Your own SSL padlockOnly on a provider subdomain. Preview URLs and bare IPs stay HTTP.
Search identityPages can be indexed, but links and rankings build on an address you do not own.
Moving to another hostThe subdomain belongs to the provider and does not travel with you.
Print, signage and social biosA long provider address is hard to say, type and remember.

Attach the domain later without a rebuild

Adding the domain is a configuration change. Files, database and design stay where they are.

  1. Register the name, or transfer one you already own, at domain registration in India.
  2. In cPanel open Domains and add the domain, or set it as the primary domain. Point its document root at the folder that already holds the site.
  3. Change the nameservers at the registrar to the pair in your WebJi welcome email, or add an A record for @ and www pointing at the server IP.
  4. Wait for the TTL to pass, then open the domain in a private window. You know it worked when the site loads from the new name.
  5. Open Settings, then General in WordPress and set both Site Address and WordPress Address to the new domain. Skip this and the site keeps redirecting to the old address.
  6. Run AutoSSL in cPanel, or issue the certificate for the new name. Add a 301 redirect from the temporary address so old links land on the domain.

WebJi shared hosting for the site itself

WebJi shared hosting starts at ₹300 per month before 18% GST on the L-Basic plan, with cPanel, a free SSL certificate and a temporary address you can use from day one. Migration from another host is free subject to terms and approval.

The domain is quoted separately when you are ready for it. Until then, publish on the subdomain or the preview URL, and email support@webji.services if either link stops resolving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I host a website without a domain name?

Yes. Publish to a provider subdomain, a cPanel preview URL or the server IP. The files, database and design are the same ones you keep when a domain is added later.

What is the cPanel temporary URL?

It is http://SERVER-IP/~username/, with the IP and username taken from the GENERAL INFORMATION panel in cPanel. It serves public_html over HTTP only, and some server configurations disable the tilde path entirely.

Will a free subdomain hurt my search rankings?

It does not block indexing, but authority builds on an address you do not own. Move to your own domain before you invest in links or content, and 301 the old address so the signals follow.

How do I move from a temporary URL to my own domain?

Add the domain in cPanel, point its document root at public_html, change the nameservers or A records, then update the WordPress site address and run AutoSSL. The files do not move.

Can I have branded email without a domain?

No. A mailbox on your own domain needs MX records on a domain you control. Until then, use a free mailbox and keep it separate from the site address.

Do I have to rebuild the site when I add a domain?

No. The domain is a name pointing at the same document root. Only the site address setting and the SSL certificate change.
