Difference between domain and hosting

Quick answer: A domain is the name people type, such as yourbrand.in. Hosting is the server that stores the pages, database, and mail. A name alone is an empty address. Hosting alone is only an IP. Nameservers join the two. WebJi® Linux shared hosting is ₹300 a month before 18% GST.

A domain is the name people type. Hosting is the server that stores the pages, the database, and the mail. A name with no hosting shows nothing. Hosting with no domain is only an IP address. Nameservers join the name to the server. Linux shared hosting at WebJi® is ₹300 a month before 18% GST.

What is the difference between a domain and hosting?

The difference between a domain and hosting is the job each one does. The domain is the name in the browser bar. Hosting is the computer that keeps the site files online and sends them when someone asks. One does not replace the other.

A house with no street address is hard to find. An address with no house is an empty plot. You register the name, then put the site on a host. The two bills stay separate.

What does a domain name do?

A domain name is a label, such as yourbrand.in or yourbrand.com. Computers find sites by a numeric IP address. People do not remember those numbers, so the domain stands in for the IP. The registry records the name to you for the term you paid.

The website is the pages and files. The domain is only the name that points at them. A name can exist with no website behind it. It can also point at email, or at a page you already have, without being the site itself.

  • The name is not the website
  • It does not store your files
  • It must be renewed, or someone else can register it

You search the name, pick the ending, and pay for a year or more. The yearly bands for .com, .in and .co.in are on the domain registration in India page. Renewal is a different number from the first year. The hosting rows further down are not the price of the name.

What does web hosting do?

Web hosting is the service that keeps your site on a server that stays online. When a browser asks for the domain, that server returns the page. A plan usually includes disk space, a database, and a control panel such as cPanel.

Linux shared hosting puts many sites on one server for a fixed monthly price. It fits a personal site or a small shop. A busier site can move to a larger plan later. WebJi® states a 99.9% uptime target. The label on the plan does not raise that figure by itself.

These Linux shared rows were read on 29 October 2026. Each figure is the monthly price in INR, before 18% GST.

The one-year column is ₹3,000 for L-Basic, ₹4,000 for L-Unlimited, and ₹7,000 for L-Developer, still before 18% GST. A size that is not on this card is quoted by email at support@webji.services before you pay.

Can you buy a domain and hosting separately?

You can buy the domain and the hosting from one company or from two. One account can set the nameservers for you. Two companies is normal when the name is already registered somewhere else.

WebJi® is not GoDaddy, and it is not Hostinger. Keep the name at the registrar you already use, and host the site here, if that is what you want. You connect them by changing nameservers. You do not buy the same name a second time.

  • One company: one login, and the nameservers are often set for you
  • Two companies: you set the nameservers yourself
  • Either way, the name and the server are different products

You still need both for a normal website. A domain with no hosting has no files to show. Hosting with no domain can be opened only by an IP address, which visitors will not type.

How do nameservers connect a domain to hosting?

Nameservers are the bridge. The registrar holds the name. Those records say which company answers DNS for it. Change the nameservers after the welcome email lists them. After they point at the host, that host's zone sends the website and the mail.

  1. Buy the domain, or confirm you already control it at the registrar.
  2. Order hosting. The welcome email lists the nameservers for that account.
  3. At the registrar, replace the old nameservers with those names and save.
  4. Open the domain in a private window. A site page, or the host's placeholder, means the name now reaches the server.
  5. Leave mail where it is until you move the MX records on purpose. Do not edit A records at the registrar after the nameservers point at the host.

DNS can take a few hours to update everywhere. If the old site still shows, wait and check again in a private window before you change another setting.

Can you change hosting and keep the domain?

Yes. The domain stays at the registrar. You point it at the new host. The name does not have to move for the files to move.

Copy the site to the new host first. Then change the nameservers, or change only the A record if the registrar still holds DNS. Mail follows the MX records. Move the website and forget MX, and mail stops or stays on the old host.

Three slips are common. The hosting bill gets paid and the domain expires. New nameservers are set while old A records stay at the registrar. Hosting is bought before anyone checks that the name is free.

  • Paying the hosting bill and letting the domain expire
  • Setting new nameservers while old A records stay at the registrar
  • Buying hosting before you check that the name is free

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a domain and web hosting?

A domain is the name people type. Web hosting is the server that stores the files and sends the page. You need the name so people can find the site, and the server so there is something to show.

Do I need both a domain and hosting?

Yes, for a normal website. You do not have to buy them on the same invoice. The name can stay at one registrar while the site is hosted at WebJi®, once the nameservers point at that host.

Can I register the domain somewhere else and host it at WebJi®?

Yes. WebJi® is not that registrar. Keep the name where it is, then set the registrar's nameservers to the ones in the WebJi® welcome email. Do not edit A records in both panels.

Can a website work with only a domain?

No. A domain with no hosting has no files to return. Visitors see a placeholder or a DNS error. Hosting without a domain can be opened by IP, which people do not remember.

How are a domain and hosting connected?

Nameservers at the registrar tell the internet which host holds the files. After that, the host's DNS zone holds the A record for the site and the MX records for mail. Edits in the other panel do nothing.

Can I change hosting and keep the same domain?

Yes. Leave the name at the registrar and point it at the new host. Copy the files first. Mail stays put until you move the MX records. Free migration is subject to terms and approval, and it is not instant.
