Docker Hosting in India

Quick answer: Docker hosting in India is a Linux VPS with root access, where you install Docker Engine and run containers. Shared hosting cannot run the Docker daemon. A small app fits on 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM. WebJi® quotes the VPS by email before you pay, and the price is before 18% GST.

What Docker hosting in India means

Docker hosting in India means a virtual server you control, with Docker Engine installed, so containers run on that server's kernel. It is not a shared cPanel account, and it is not a product name by itself. You install the engine, pull images, and start containers.

An image is the packed application. A container is that image running. Compose starts several containers from one file. You still need disk for images, and a volume for any database you do not want to lose when a container is replaced.

  • Image: the packed application.
  • Container: that image running.
  • Compose: one file that starts several containers.
  • Volume: disk that survives a container replacement.

Why shared hosting cannot run Docker

WebJi® shared plans are L-Basic at ₹300 a month, L-Unlimited at ₹400, and L-Developer at ₹700, before 18% GST. Those monthly figures were read on 30 October 2026. The plans provide the host's PHP and MySQL stack. They do not let you run the Docker daemon, because a container would share the host kernel with every other account.

KubernetesOrchestrates many nodesSeveral servers and rolling updates

The same boundary is covered in shared versus VPS hosting. Docker hosting in India uses a Linux VPS with root, which is VPS hosting in India on Ubuntu. The monthly figure is quoted by email before you pay. There is no free Docker plan.

How much RAM Docker hosting needs

Size the server from the containers, not from the engine. Add about 1 GB of RAM for the operating system on top of what the app and database need. Build images on a laptop or in CI when the VPS has only 2 vCPU, then pull the finished image.

WorkloadSample fitWhy
One web container and a small database2 vCPU, 4 GB RAMVPS-Start sample, quoted
A Compose stack or a database with real data4 vCPU, 8 GB RAMVPS-Growth sample, quoted
Several services, or image builds on the server8 vCPU, 16 GB RAMVPS-Pro sample, quoted

Sample sizes, quoted before payment, are VPS-Start at 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe and 2 TB transfer; VPS-Growth at 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 120 GB NVMe and 4 TB; and VPS-Pro at 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 240 GB NVMe and 8 TB. The quote states the monthly amount before 18% GST. Those rows are not a shared-hosting upgrade.

Installing Docker and Compose on Ubuntu

Use Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04. The steps below install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin from Docker's Ubuntu repository. The install worked when hello-world prints its message and exits cleanly.

  1. SSH in as a user with sudo on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04. Run sudo apt-get update.
  2. Install the packages that fetch the signing key: sudo apt-get install -y ca-certificates curl. Then sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings.
  3. Save Docker's key with sudo curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc and sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc.
  4. Add the stable repository for this Ubuntu release: echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu $(. /etc/os-release && echo ${UBUNTU_CODENAME:-$VERSION_CODENAME}) stable" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null. Then sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get install -y docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin.
  5. Check the engine with sudo docker run --rm hello-world. It worked when that command prints a hello message and exits. docker compose version should print a version string.

Skip the docker group if only sudo users should control the daemon. If you do add your user, log out and back in before you test again.

How to deploy the first Docker container

A first deploy is one image, one published port, and a name you can stop. From the VPS, sudo docker run -d --name web --restart unless-stopped -p 8080:80 your-image starts it in the background. Browse to http://SERVER:8080. If the page loads, the port map is right.

Replace your-image with an image you pulled. Keep port 80 for this container only when nothing else is bound to it, and use -p 80:80 in that case. If the browser cannot connect, check the host firewall and that the process is still up with sudo docker ps.

How Docker volumes keep MongoDB data

A container's own writable layer is deleted when you remove the container. A named volume is not. Create it with sudo docker volume create dbdata and mount it at /data/db for MongoDB. Replacing the container keeps the files.

That is the usual docker mongodb layout on one VPS: the database container owns the volume, and the app container reaches it over a Compose network. Dump the database, or copy the volume, before you delete dbdata. The volume is the only copy if you have no other backup.

When one Docker VPS is enough and Kubernetes is not

One VPS is enough when one person can SSH in, the stack fits in the RAM you ordered, and a short pause for an update is acceptable. Compose on that server restarts the containers. A single site or a small API does not need a cluster.

Look at Kubernetes when the same stack already runs on more than one server, you need a rolling update with no single host, or several services ship every day. A cluster does not make a 4 GB VPS larger.

Docker hosting in India questions

Can I run Docker on shared hosting in India?

No. Shared plans do not allow the Docker daemon. Use a Linux VPS with root, then install Docker Engine.

How much RAM does Docker hosting need?

A single web container plus a small database fits on 4 GB RAM and 2 vCPU. Use 8 GB when the database holds real data. Use 16 GB when several services run together or you build images on the server.

How do I know Docker installed on the VPS?

Run sudo docker run --rm hello-world. It should print a hello message and exit cleanly. docker compose version should print a version. If the shell says the command is not found, the install did not finish.

Does WebJi® offer free Docker hosting?

No. There is no free Docker plan and no free VPS. The server is quoted by email before you pay.

What does Docker hosting cost at WebJi®?

Shared plans are ₹300, ₹400 or ₹700 a month before 18% GST and cannot run Docker. A Linux VPS is quoted before payment. Sample sizes start at 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM. There is no separate Docker fee in that quote.

Can I run MongoDB in a Docker container?

Yes. Put the database files on a named volume mounted at /data/db. Deleting the container does not delete that volume. Dump the database before you remove the volume.

Is Docker better than installing the app directly?

Use Docker when you want the same image on a laptop and on the server. Install on the VPS directly when the app is one package and you would rather patch the operating system packages yourself.

When should I use Kubernetes instead of one VPS?

Stay on one VPS while one Compose file and one server cover the app. Look at Kubernetes when the same stack must run on several servers with rolling updates. A cluster does not replace a too-small VPS.
