- Open the domain with /wp-admin, log in, and delete the sample post. The dashboard opening is the sign the install worked.
How do you install a WordPress theme?
A theme is the layout. In wp-admin open Appearance, then Themes, then Add New. Search the theme, choose Install, then Activate. A free theme from that directory is enough for a first site.
After Activate, open the site in a private window. The homepage should show the new layout. Upload a zip only if you bought a theme, from Add New, then Upload Theme, and keep one default theme installed so you can switch back.
Which pages do you publish first?
Create Home, About, and Contact under Pages, then Add New. Under Settings, then Reading, choose a static homepage so the site does not open on the latest post. Add the three pages to the menu.
On Contact, add a form that actually sends mail. The clicks are covered in adding a contact form. A page left as a draft is not on the public site.
How do you know the website is live?
Use a private window so you are not seeing the editor. The domain should show Home, the menu should open About and Contact, and the padlock should be present because the WordPress plans include SSL. Log in at wp-admin once more.
Send the sitemap from one SEO plugin to Google Search Console after the pages are public. That step does not replace the logged-out check.
